Review of Xiaomi Redmi 3 smartphone

8,000 rubles), but in online stores, which is natural, it costs more - around 10,000 rubles.

Personally, I think that Redmi 3 has one main feature - it is a capacious battery with relatively compact dimensions and adequate technical characteristics. The fact is that now you won’t surprise anyone with smartphones with large screens, top-end parameters and a “big” battery, but it’s extremely difficult to find a fast, well-built gadget with excellent battery life.

Design, dimensions, controls

The new device from Xiaomi has the following dimensions: 139.3x69.6x8.5 mm, and weighs only 144 grams. Let me remind you that there is a 4100 mAh power supply inside! The dimensions of Redmi 3 make it comfortable to use even for those who prefer miniature devices like the iPhone 5/5S. It lies perfectly in the hand due to the sloping edges and a flat back surface.

However, there is a significant disadvantage in the design of the gadget. The fact is that the rear panel is made of metal, and the sides and corners are absolutely smooth. Because of what the device becomes very slippery. I rarely focus on such things, because most often there are no problems, but in the case of Redmi 3, I had to carefully get it out of my pockets, hold it tighter in my palm while talking or using the subway during rush hour: every now and then Xiaomi strove slip out of your hands.

There are three color versions: gold, dark gray (black front panel and silver "back"), light gray (white front panel and silver "back"). We had a gold-colored model on the test. During use, there were no crash tests, but professional instinct tells me that over time the paint will gradually wear off.

On the reverse side of the gadget is a grid of rhombuses made up of small dots. It looks somehow ambiguous: on the one hand, it is elegant, on the other, it seems to be rustic. The drawing is almost not felt by the fingers, but creates a rough surface.

There are two plastic inserts on the top and bottom of the reverse side. These are the ones that will be erased first.

The front side is protected by glass. There is no information about the manufacturer. For a week of active "yuza" no scratches or chips. There is an oleophobic coating, I liked its quality, the finger glides easily.

On the top of the front panel there are sensors, a selfie camera, a speech speaker. The speaker is loud, the interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly, the tone is pleasant. Below the display are touch buttons (there is no backlight) and an indicator of missed events (under the Home button). The indicator is so small and dim that it is of little use.

Bottom - microUSB and microphone, top - second microphone, 3.5 mm headphone jack, IR transmitter.

On the left is a metal joint slot for either two SIM cards (micro + nano), or one SIM card (micro) and a memory card (microSD).

On the right is the power button and the volume rocker. Using them is not very comfortable due to the fact that they have a low fit and too smooth shape: either I could not immediately feel the elements, or my finger often slipped off.

On the back are the camera, flash and speakerphone.

This product uses a 5-inch screen. The physical size is 62x111 mm, the frame is 13 mm at the top, 16 mm at the bottom, and about 3.5 mm each on the right and left. There is an anti-reflective coating.

The display resolution of Xiaomi Redmi 3 is HD, that is, 720x1280 pixels, the density is 293 pixels per inch. IPS OGS Matrix. For a diagonal of 5 inches, the resolution is quite normal, the pixelization is almost imperceptible, the picture is clear.

The maximum brightness of white is 460 cd/m2, the maximum brightness of black is 0.65 cd/m2. Contrast - 710:1. Additional measurements are in the screenshots below.

Viewing angles are maximum, but the screen is slightly violet when tilted. Pleasant color reproduction, good contrast, stable temperature and gamma values, excellent sensitivity.

There is a one-handed operation mode: the interface is reduced to 4 or 3.5 inches of the screen.

Behavior in the light

Shadow Behavior

This model uses a 4100 mAh non-removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery. The manufacturer does not provide data on autonomy.

The Redmi 3 saves a lot of energy: during the week of testing, I had to charge the device only twice. Screen glow time is about 5 - 6 hours!

In my mode of working with the device, the gadget functioned for 4 days: an hour of calls, constant synchronization with Wi-Fi (every day from 9.00 to 03.00, Twitter, mail, Skype, Whatsapp), 4-6 hours of LTE.

At maximum load, you can achieve 8 hours of screen glow at 100% brightness of the matrix backlight. That is, if you even overactively "torment" your smartphone, then count on a couple of days.

With games, the situation is a little worse: the battery runs out after 7-8 hours of continuous "battle". The video device "twirls" for about 15 hours (HD).

There are two power saving modes:

  • Standard. Restricted access to the network and to GPS
  • Elevated. Background activity is limited

The device works with two SIM cards in micro and nano formats. Both support 4G LTE FDD-LTE B1/B3/B7. There are Wi-Fi b / g / n, Bluetooth version 4.1, a microUSB connector for charging / synchronization, an IR transmitter. Of course, the device is "friendly" with GPS, GLONASS (Qualcomm® IZat™ Gen8C).

Memory and memory card

The smartphone is equipped with 2 GB LPDDR3 800 MHz RAM. Built-in memory - 16 GB (just over 10 GB available) + memory card up to 128 GB.

There are two modules here, in fact, as in almost any other similar smartphone: both the main one (with phase detection autofocus, aperture F2.0), and the front one (aperture F2.2, wide angle) at 5 MP.

Despite the low cost of the device, the main camera pleased: good detail, almost always perfect white balance, sharp shots. Since the optics have an aperture of F2.0, in addition to bright shots (I think you understand what I mean together with aperture, shutter speed and ISO parameters), you also get nice bokeh.

When shooting at home, where the lighting is not the best, try to shoot carefully, as the camera sets the shutter speed to 1/20 - 1/30. In the evening or at night, keep your phone still: the shutter speed reaches 1/10 of a second.

When shooting in low light conditions (let's call it LLD for short next time), the picture is washed out. Apparently, this is how noise reduction works in Redmi 3. However, this quality is quite enough to transfer images to social networks. That is, Xiaomi generally shoots well.

Phase autofocus is a definite plus. In the daytime, sharpness is induced almost instantly, with NDO it “thinks”, but the speed is somewhere similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6.

Video - the usual FullHD at 30 fps during the day and at 16 fps NWO. The exposure is adjusted both automatically and manually.

The front camera shoots very well, but do not forget to wipe the lens peephole, otherwise the frames may come out blurry.

Performance and software platform

The Xiaomi Redmi 3 model is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 616 (MSM8939v2) chipset: 64 bit, 28 nm, 8 cores (up to 4x1.7 GHz + 4x1.2 GHz). In this case, the first 4 cores are needed for resource-intensive tasks, and the remaining 4 cores are for simple calculations. Adreno 405 is responsible for the graphics with support for DirectX 11.2, OpenCL 1.2 OpenGL ES 3.1.

The interface is smooth, does not bug or slow down.

There is a typical situation with games: everything starts, but some complex games can slow down (Unkilled at maximum glitches), there are no problems with Real Racing, Modern Combat 5, Dead Effect 2 (ultra settings).

The device has on board the operating system MIUI number 7, which is based on Google Android version 5.1.1. In this version, face recognition appeared in the gallery, you can put a video on the ringtone, a “Children's” mode appeared. According to Xiaomi developers, the overall performance has increased by 30%, and the battery consumption in the new MIUI V7 has been reduced by 25%.

The speaker does not have the highest volume, but it sounds clear, does not wheeze. In the settings there is "Mi sound enhancement" (headphone types are selected for setting sound presets) and a 7-band equalizer (from 60 Hz to 14 kHz). The sound volume in the headphones is high, I liked the sound.

The quality of the connection did not raise any questions for me. The vibration signal is average in strength, so you are unlikely to feel it in the pockets of a warm jacket.

In Russia, Xiaomi Redmi 3 is offered from 11,000 to 13,000 rubles. For this money, you get an interesting device for those who care about dimensions: you rarely see devices with screens of 5 inches or less, which use good hardware and a capacious battery. In addition, the price is quite attractive.

From the review, I think you have already understood that the device has a lot of positive aspects: materials, performance, two SIM cards, a slot for a memory card, 4G, good cameras, and so on. However, there is a relatively serious drawback: the body is extremely slippery, the smartphone is “asking” to the ground. If you find a cover, then there will be less problems.
