Toshiba NB200 laptop review

The Toshiba NB100 netbook, which we wrote about in the fall of 2008, turned out, frankly, to be nothing. Not a single advantage over competitors except for a couple of useful little things, moreover, it is problematic to use this device every day because of the small display, which is huge for a netbook power supply. In general, a strange, passing model, a test of strength for the company. At least I wanted to believe it. Rumors about the next laptop appeared a long time ago, a couple of months ago, the first photos of the device appeared on the network. Actually, I suggest you get to know the device better without long introductions.

Design, construction

Nice and simple appearance, three available colors - full black, silver, silver with a brown cap. This time we don't have something like NB100 at all, brand notes are clearly visible, this is a lacquered lid with rounded corners, and a thick loop dividing the body into two parts. The model is quite thin, small in size - 263x192.3x25.4 mm, weight - 1.18 kg with a standard three-cell battery. As you can see, the battery is built into the case, the high-capacity battery sticks out quite a lot, but this is a trade-off for increased battery life. At the front end there is a neat area with activity indicators, it looks great, simple and informative, the backlight is not strong. On the other hand, there is a slot for SD memory cards. There are three USB ports, one of them allows you to charge any portable devices while the NB200 is in "sleep" mode.Nice addition to say the least. Such a number of ports allows you to connect a mouse, and an external hard drive, and charge your phone. On the left side there is a monitor output, an Ethernet cable connector, a mini-jack, a microphone connector. On the right is a power supply connector, a hole for a lock. In my opinion, the latter is already becoming an anachronism, I have never seen a person who would attach his laptop to anything.

The battery sits tight, the lid moves tight, there are rubber pads on the display, legs on the bottom, everything is as it should be. Just in case, here is a list of available ports, taken from the official website:

  • 1 x DC input
  • 1 x External monitor
  • 1 x RJ-45
  • 1 x external microphone
  • 1 x built-in microphone
  • 1 x headphones (stereo)
  • 3 (left 1, right 2) x USB 2.0 with Sleep-and-Charge
  • 1 x built-in VGA webcam
  • 1 x 2-in-1 Bridge Media slot (supports SD™ Cards up to 16 GB and MultiMedia Card™ up to 2 GB)

Keyboard

One of the most important elements of any netbook is the keyboard, it is on it that your impressions of working on such a device depend, whether it's "stuffing" text in Word or chatting in ICQ. In my opinion, they made a very good keyboard for the NB200. Moreover, an interesting point: in a brown laptop there is a larger gap between the keys, it resembles the keyboards in Sony laptops - another argument in favor of the brown “beauty”. If we talk about the black version, here the buttons feel like VAIO SZ, both in appearance and in response.Eighty-six keys, which are not particularly faulty, Enter is large, left Shift is also, as you can see, some buttons have been turned into sort of stripes that you can’t even call buttons. Nevertheless, the main unit pleases with its size, there will be no problems with the localized keyboard. I typed a couple of texts using the NB200, used it to communicate in Skype, I want to note that communication with the device does not cause any problems at all. Usually they say about laptops that the keyboard takes some getting used to - this is not the case here. Good, high-quality "clave". I think the brown version is even better.

There are no separate buttons for controlling multimedia, the power key is in the middle of the loop, it has a milky backlight. It looks completely natural, there are no questions here either.

The touchpad, I note, was made large, the buttons too, it is convenient to use it. But, in any case, I highly recommend using a mouse with the NB200, preferably a wireless one, even better - a Logitech Nano with a neat little transmitter. I also liked that when typing, the hands lie on the sides of the touchpad, it is correctly positioned, and the wrists do not get tired when typing for a long time.

Display

Ten-inch display (10.1 inches) with a mirror coating, maximum resolution - 1024x600 pixels, good horizontal viewing angles, not very good vertical ones. There is LED lighting. The coating, of course, glares, in a cafe you have to look for a dark corner so that no one drags you away. Above the display is a webcam lens (VGA), a microphone hole, the bezel is well assembled, no play.

The movie experience is mixed, it all depends on the chosen angle. The black color here is normal, in principle, it can be much worse. When connected to an external monitor, a resolution of 1600x1200 is supported. Well, there’s nothing to say about the “graphics card”, the Intel GMA 950 module has long been familiar to us - films, presentation making, very old toys, you can’t count on something more serious.

Food

The first thing to say thank you for is the power supply. In size, it is about the same as the VAIO P, maybe a little more. The cables are long, but that's okay. The main thing is that now there is no huge "pigs", like the NB100. Operating time after a full charge in maximum performance mode is just over three hours, most likely, an extended battery will be available for sale, which will give us about six hours of operation. In my opinion, they would have made the price at the level of five thousand rubles for such an accessory, and they would have taken it immediately, in addition to the netbook, a necessary thing. It increases the weight, however, and the size too, but this is nothing compared to a long work offline.

Performance

Here things are like this, again, I will give official information:

  • Type: Intel Atom N270 processor
  • Clock frequency: 1.60 GHz
  • Front bus: 533 MHz
  • Second level cache: 512 KB

I suppose you already know this processor from many other laptops, we will not find fault with it, for a netbook the solution is quite normal. Interestingly, during use, I noticed that the NB200 turns on and wakes up pretty quickly. Otherwise, the performance of the device is at a normal level, for the simultaneous work with office documents, an Internet browser, a communication program and other everyday software, there is enough “power”. I didn't watch huge, heavy films "weighing" ten gigabytes on this machine, as for typical samples (1.5-2 GB), the playback is smooth, there are no problems. As a large PMP, a netbook is very suitable.

A 120 GB hard drive is installed, I assume that there will be modifications with a more capacious hard drive and an SSD.

Multimedia

For such a small device, the NB200 has quite good speakers, you can watch a movie without headphones, turn on music or Internet radio. I want to emphasize that the netbook is very good for recording podcasts, the connected Plantronics headset with USB behaved normally, there were no interference, there was no extra noise. I also want to draw your attention to the finish of the microphone connectors, mini-jack, it’s very correct to do this, a metal ring on the outside is good.

System and programs

The netbook will come with Windows XP installed, I think that for most this is the most normal option, with Vista it would be prettier, but not as fast (although one can argue here). For me, the fix idea is to put the "seven" here, but there's just no time. Maybe later, when the brown model is on hand?

The list of pre-installed software is as follows:

  • Connectivity Doctor
  • Toshiba Bluetooth™ Stack
  • Toshiba User's Guide
  • Chicony Camera Assistant
  • McAfee® Internet Security Suite - Toshiba Edition (including 30 days free updates over the Internet)
  • Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator
  • Microsoft® Works, Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2007 (Free 60 Day Trial)
  • ConfigFree™
  • Toshiba Utilities and Drivers
  • Toshiba Bluetooth™ Monitor

So, immediately after turning it on, you need to Toyota Vitz 2010 1.5 FWD 5dr Black uninstall McAfee antivirus, the rest is nothing special, nothing special « Thank you for proprietary Bluetooth drivers. Actually, what else can be "firewood" for the stack from Toshiba? The good thing is that when you connect a wireless headset, the profiles switch automatically, which I really like. Used Jabra Halo, the connection is stable, the sound quality is good.

I forgot to say: of course, there is both Wi-Fi (802.11b / g) and Bluetooth. It is likely that the NB200 will appear with WiMax, I assume that negotiations on this topic with Yota have either already taken place or will take place. In any case, for residents of the capital, a netbook with 4G is a useful thing, the main thing is that it should not cost much.

Price and competitors

Again, according to my assumptions, the price of Toshiba NB200 will be about twenty thousand rubles per unit. By and large, I see one, but an extremely serious competitor - the Samsung NC-10 WiMax is already on sale and actively advertised, and it costs just about twenty thousand. On the plus side, I would include a long battery life from the kit. But the NB200 has a better battery, and it is still unclear, it may well turn out that models with a six-cell battery will be supplied to our country. Who knows, maybe they will be generous. Which of these models to choose is up to you, the NB200 has a very good keyboard. But for Moscow, the ability of the NC10 to work with WiMax overrides the advantages of the NB200, so if this model has a module, then I would give my vote for it. If the presence of 4G is not critical, then this is a matter of personal preference.

Conclusions

In my opinion, the second pancake turned out to be not lumpy, nice appearance, good keyboard, USB-connector with "recharging", three color options - I would say, a very high-quality machine. Here, after all, as, in fact, manufacturers have to make an omelette from the same ingredients. It will not work out of eggs, milk, salt and pepper to make a roast. Someone adds tomatoes to an omelette, someone adds onions, someone adds delicious sausages. However, an omelette is still an omelet. Eh, I liked the NB200, but I would like to add WiMax and an increased capacity battery to the kit, then the netbook will become an order of magnitude more interesting. A good model, which I strongly recommend for purchase.

On my own, I will say that although I don’t use netbooks, the NB200 evoked positive emotions, I would like to see a variant with a different keyboard. As soon as it is in my hands, I will add photos of this option here. Well, I will keep you informed about the time of appearance on sale, equipment and so on.

If the availability of 4G is not critical, then it is already a matter of personal preference.

There are three USB ports, one of them allows you to charge any portable devices while the NB200 is in "sleep" mode. Nice addition to say the least.

On the bottom, everything is in order, the RAM compartment is easily accessible, by default it is one gigabyte, you can “finish off” up to two.

If we talk about colors, the black version is the most practical, the silver one looks very nice, the model with a brown cover is even more beautiful. There is a choice, and this is very good, both a boy and a girl, both a man and a woman can find their NB200. The black laptop has a varnished lid, fingerprints on it are not very noticeable, the pattern and stripes are to be thanked for. They are repeated on the touchpad. The assembly of the device is normal, I would like to see commercial samples, the prototype has minor flaws that I will not mention - these points will definitely be eliminated.

If we talk about the black version, here the buttons feel like VAIO SZ, both in appearance and in response. Eighty-six keys, which are not particularly faulty, Enter is large, left Shift is also, as you can see, some buttons have been turned into sort of stripes that you can’t even call buttons.

So, immediately after turning on Toyota Vitz 2010 1.5 FWD 5dr Black, you need to remove McAfee antivirus, the rest is quite okay, special thanks for the proprietary Bluetooth drivers. Actually, what else can be "firewood" for the stack from Toshiba? The good thing is that when you connect a wireless headset, the profiles switch automatically, which I really like. Used Jabra Halo, the connection is stable, the sound quality is good.
