Positioning

The Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor is currently the most advanced monitor in the company's line of gaming monitors. I am sure that the list of characteristics has already made it clear. The model is aimed at the PC gaming segment, to a lesser extent - at gaming laptops and consoles. It maintains a balance between a business style and an aggressive gaming component, the design catches the eye, and it is difficult to confuse it with anything.

Samsung Odyssey G9 experience

In almost all respects, the solution is close to the ultimate, such a monitor will qualitatively improve the gaming and working experience. It's no joke, a diagonal of 49 inches with a curved display with a DWQHD (dual wide QHD) resolution, as if two curved QHD monitors were connected into one. However, there are not many companies that have swung at such a combination of characteristics with a 1000R bend, this fact only spurred interest in testing. The format of the experience of use was not chosen by chance, the model has been on the market for some time, it is somehow too late for a review.

Appearance, ergonomics

Assembly is simple: you need to place the stand in the grooves on the monitor body and then screw heavy metal legs to it, this does not require any tools, a convenient screw is provided. After that, you need to fix a contrasting white panel on the black rack. On it, by the way, there is a convenient folding hook for headphones. For lovers of wall mounts, there was also an outlet here: if desired, the monitor can also be mounted on a wall or bracket with VESA 100x100 support. Not to say that the most obvious and obvious scenario, on the other hand, such moments are purely individual.

As I already mentioned, the design of the model is amazing from the first minutes of taking the monitor out of the box. The white back panel housing with circular lighting in the center looks like a sci-fi movie prop. The surface of the case is glossy, but the prints on it will remain only during installation, in the future it is unlikely that anyone will touch it, except perhaps to adjust the monitor. Rotation of 15 degrees in both directions is available, as well as height adjustment in the range of 12 cm.

Samsung Odyssey G9 Experience

The eye immediately falls on the Infinity Core RGB lighting element, located around the mount of the stand to the main body. The Samsung Odyssey G9 wouldn't be truly gaming if the backlight wasn't customizable. You can select an effect, a static color, or turn off the backlight. The backlight looks good, has an average brightness that does not burn out the eyes in the dark. Subjectively, I would like a little more color saturation. It would also be nice to add a synchronization mode with events on the screen, which would give a kind of dynamic background lighting, next to the wall would look interesting.

Samsung Odyssey G9 Experience

Undoubtedly, the Samsung Odyssey G9 will dominate the desktop, not least because of its size. A depth of 42 centimeters and a length of more than a meter with a weight of 16 kilograms provide that the user will take care of organizing the space for such a rather big monitor in advance. For example, my desktop is clearly not designed for such a diagonal and dimensions, especially at first it was not very comfortable, I had to get a wireless keyboard from the bowels of the drawers and move away from the monitor. Otherwise, it was simply impossible to cover the entire display with a glance. And there is a lot of it, sometimes even more than it would seem necessary. But you quickly get used to the good, and after a few days it is already difficult to perceive a smaller diagonal, you have to return to old habits.

Connectors, connection

Samsung Odyssey G9 experience

The panel with connectors is located on the back of the case on the right: there are two USB ports (2.0 and 3.0), two DisplayPort, one HDMI and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There is no output to external acoustics, as well as regular speakers. Not the most positive characteristic, however, such audio systems, as a rule, do not differ in sound quality. The connected wires are passed into a special groove and go down through the hole in the rack, into the cable management hole in the table, just under the table or, in the case of wall mounting, to the place where the system unit / laptop is installed. The connectors are covered with a panel to match the case, complementing the visual aesthetics.

Samsung Odyssey G9 experience

Based on the set of connectors, I would still recommend using the Samsung Odyssey G9 with system units. Yes, DisplayPort is also found in laptops, even if they cost a lot, but more often the connector is found in full-fledged PCs. Through HDMI, the frequency will definitely not be at the level that the monitor is capable of, we will return to this point. There are serious questions about the lack of Thunderbolt or the same Type-C, apparently, we should expect them in the next generation. At least it's time.

Display, gaming and work experience

Looking at such a screen, it is easy to forget about any subjective trifles that may not suit the monitor. It affects the notorious wow effect that occurs every time you start working on this giant. According to the manufacturer, the radius of the screen is maximally adjusted to the curvature of the lens of our eyes. I do not undertake to confirm or refute this statement, but in fact it is comfortable to work with such a bend after a period of getting used to, the main thing is to properly organize the workplace. In this case, the screen will completely capture the field of view, giving a complete immersion in the displayed content. To understand the radius - look from above.

Samsung Odyssey G9 Experience

Interestingly, the withdrawal period also had an interesting feature, it is likely that it was subjective: after a concave display, an ordinary flat one seemed to be convex in the center for a couple of days, at one time TV screens were like that. A funny but annoying visual artifact has gradually faded away.

During a closer inspection and checking for light, an overexposed area was found on the top edge of the monitor. It is distinguishable under the condition of minimal lighting in the room and close to the maximum settings of the Samsung Odyssey G9, which displays a solid black color. Is light critical? It's hard to say, from a premium monitor you expect perfect results in everything. At least in normal work, he never caught my eye.

Samsung Odyssey G9 experience Samsung Odyssey G9 experience

The brightness level for such a diagonal is decent and, for my taste, even excessive, a little more than half the scale was enough for both office tasks and games. I was very pleased with the colors and the picture as a whole: the VA-matrix gives good viewing angles with rich shades of the colors of the spectrum. I liked that with almost any viewing angle, the contrast of the image practically does not decrease.

Support for HDR 10+ and HDR1000 provides a cool picture when watching compatible videos, this quality is extremely easy to get used to. Of course, you don’t think about all these options when using the monitor, the monitor provides such complete immersion. But not everything in the display is 100% perfect. For example, HDR mode supports local dimming, but SDR does not have this option. Yes, this feature will be absolutely not critical for someone, but a trained eye will notice that when displaying bright objects in a dark background, there will be a small shining halo around them. Frankly, I myself noticed the effect with the help of a more experienced friend. Also, in dark conditions, you can notice how the black color fades into gray tones, which can be distracting from the gameplay. So if you often play in the dark, this moment can make itself felt.

Samsung Odyssey G9 Experience

Samsung Odyssey G9 can and should be customized to suit your scenarios and preferences. Display settings are controlled using a five-way joystick on the bottom of the monitor. In an intuitive menu, you can adjust almost everything, from brightness, contrast and backlight to the virtual sight and the picture-in-picture mode, also available when connecting multiple video sources.

A gaming laptop was used during testing, its power was enough to squeeze out a decent experience in games. It is worth making a reservation that not all modern games support a 32:9 ratio at this resolution, so you either have to endure the frames on the sides both in the game itself and in screensavers, or lower the resolution in the game settings. Sometimes a fuzzy image is noticeable along the edge of the frames, again, I advise you to connect via DisplayPort, the performance will be noticeably better.

Samsung Odyssey G9 experience Samsung Odyssey G9 experience Samsung Experience Odyssey G9 Experience using Samsung Odyssey G9

Remembering the excellent experience with Doom Eternal on the previous test curved model, I did not fail to run into it again on the “full stuffing” of a top-end monitor and no less top-end laptop, a review of which, by the way, will appear on the site in the near future.

Samsung Odyssey G9 Experience

Games are games, but in work scenarios, the Samsung Odyssey G9 proves itself with a bang. First of all, everything that can be placed on it. No long tables and texts are terrible for the monitor, you can safely open it to the fullest and not worry that something will not be visible. Multitasking increases, and with it, of course, the risk of being distracted by YouTube or another hobby at hand. The monitor is equally good friends with both Windows and Mac OS, the latter is even better in some places.

Summarizing the passage about the display: it is very important to understand what and how will be connected to such a monitor. Unfortunately, it was not possible to squeeze the full power out of it, it seems that when connected via DP, the impressions would be on a qualitatively different level. I am sure that potential buyers of such models are aware of this and already know in advance what will work and how in their working / gaming configuration. Otherwise, it will be a cool and expensive gadget with a cool design, the potential of which is far from being fully used.

General impressions

The Samsung Odyssey G9 example confirmed the opinion that the curved display is not a tinsel and not a marketing slogan, but a technology that is quite workable and suitable for daily use. Of course, everything is an amateur, but personally I get used to it instantly, it pumps my scripts so much, which are mostly focused on work now.

For 110,000 rubles, the model offers a high-quality display with full immersion thanks to an impressive diagonal with a large bending radius. Not without complaints, both in terms of technical equipment and image. In the latter case, everything, again, depends on the nature of the connection and user settings, but there are also moments that do not depend on the user in any way, for example, the situation with local dimming, these are the features of the backlight technology used. By the way, in the updated lineup they promise a model with Quantum Mini LED backlight technology, it is with its help that it is planned to cope with uneven dimming.

Samsung Odyssey G9 experience

It is clearly not easy to find analogues for such models, the Samsung C49RG9 is the closest: it has a similar diagonal and resolution, but a smaller bending radius and a native refresh rate, a slightly longer response. With very similar characteristics, this model has relatively smaller dimensions and costs around 90,000 rubles.

In the course of testing the hero of the material, positive emotions prevailed, as expected, even if there were some moments that led out of the comfort zone. I would advise such a monitor for purchase only if I am sure that the potential buyer is actually aware of what he needs it for, and at the same time has an adequate workplace. When all factors are taken into account and the pros and cons are weighed, the result is a powerful and visually appealing space to consume content, solve work problems, and conquer the virtual battlefields.

The author thanks the Russian representative office of Samsung for providing the Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor for review.

We continue to experiment with monitors in the context of work scenarios and entertainment. This time, we managed to take a step further and test the sensational gaming monitor from Samsung, which gives a persistent “wow-effect” of appearance and characteristics and adequately manifests itself in work and games.

In almost all respects, the solution is close to the ultimate, such a monitor will qualitatively improve the gaming and working experience. It's no joke, a diagonal of 49 inches with a curved display with a resolution of DWQHD (dual wide QHD), as if two curved QHD monitors are connected into one.

Remembering the excellent experience with Doom Eternal on the previous test curved model, I did not fail to run into it again on the “full stuffing” of a top-end monitor and no less top-end laptop, a review of which, by the way, will appear on the site in the near future.
