Experience using Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. Pros and cons

When immersed in a topic, other people seem to know just as much about it. In practice, everything turns out to be completely different. Smartphones with flexible screens appeared on the mass sale two years ago, but for many they remain a curiosity. No wonder the first Fold caused amazement: new form factor, unusual appearance.

But it is striking that the second generation evokes exactly the same emotions, although these devices are already being sold in a noticeably larger volume, their recognition is growing, and more of them are in the hands of users. All the same, such devices are expensive, which means that they are far from accessible to everyone, as a result, they were heard about at best, but never held in their hands. In 2020, according to a report by Counterpoint Research, 2.8 million flexible screen smartphones were sold worldwide, of which 2.04 million were from Samsung's first and second generation Fold, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip.

It should be noted that Samsung smartphones have no direct competitors in most global markets. Copies of the Galaxy Fold are created by both Huawei and Xiaomi, but outside of China, these devices are practically inaccessible. It turns out that in the same Russia, Samsung's share in the segment of smartphones with flexible screens is about 99%, which becomes to some extent a problem, since the company is developing this segment alone. On the other hand, it is the ideas embodied in the Galaxy Fold that push the development of the segment up, it is these devices that are copied and reproduced by other companies, they set the bar for everyone.

Each device has its own audience, the same Fold is a male device, it is quite large and massive. I know women who use this smartphone, but I can’t say that there are many of them. Usually women choose the Z Flip bed because it is compact and looks like a powder box when closed. And when open, it gives a screen like on Samsung flagships, that is, the maximum diagonal.

Mechanical strength, screen film

The question that is usually asked to me when they see that the device can be opened, to some extent, set the teeth on edge: but it will not break, how reliable is the design? Considering that I used the first Fold and did not experience any problems, everything is just as good with the second, although the mechanical strength of the screen has been increased from generation to generation. The declared number of openings / closings of the device is at least 200 thousand times (in the first Fold it was 120 thousand times). Even with the most active use of this device, you will have enough for at least five years, it will grow old morally faster than you will kill it.

The next clarifying question with a twist: surely it will not survive in our winter conditions, will it be impossible to use it? Why such a question arises, where his legs grow from, is not clear to me. Both the first and second Fold are my main devices, I use them all year round, including in winter at sub-zero temperatures. They work fine in minus twenty-five, there were no problems. In the pocket of jeans or a jacket, they do not freeze so much that something happens to the electronics. But here it is important to make one remark - I only opened the Fold a couple of times in the cold and watched the video on the internal screen, I had to do it urgently. Usually you use an external screen, it is big enough. This is the principle of using this device, on the go it is easier and easier to answer with one hand, as well as see everything that has been sent to you on an external screen.

The hinge freezes in the cold in the open state, there are no miracles here. Smooth, soft movement, familiar in everyday life, becomes difficult, as if there is grease in the hinge (it is not) and it has thickened. But since there is no need for such a disclosure, I do not see a problem at all. You can, of course, argue that someone wants to watch movies on the internal screen in the cold, but this is corny inconvenient and cold. Such a “problem” is not just far-fetched, it arises from an excessive desire to find minuses where there are none.

Another "minus", arising from the design features, is the lack of protection against water, you can not swim with this device. Several times in online battles I heard this argument, which puts an end to the Fold, since a person cannot imagine a smartphone without such protection . Every time I imagine that a person who claims the need for protection from water lives on the sea, goes out every morning on a boat to return with a catch. In extreme cases, he simply lives by the sea and constantly hangs out on the beaches, takes his phone with him to swim and take some photos. But the geography of the debaters does not hint at any noticeable water bodies. Usually these disputes lead to the sacramental “but you can’t talk about it in the rain, it will deteriorate”, which is bullshit. You can talk in the rain, downpour, use it in the open, and nothing will come of it. I did this many times, the only minus of the rain is that then dried stains remain on the screen, which should be wiped with a damp cloth. Plus, the screen reacts to drops of water, accidental clicks occur. But besides these obvious shortcomings, there is nothing else.

TCL TW30 MoveAudio S600 TWS headphones review

Any decent smartphone manufacturer is bound to offer their own TWS headset with them. So TCL introduced in December on the Russian market not only a flagship smartphone, but also a flagship headset. Let's see what happened ...

A film was originally glued on the internal screen, it is factory. You can peel off the protective film if you don't like it, a few of my friends have done that. Samsung does not recommend doing this, as it provides additional screen protection in a number of situations. Samsung's motivation is understandable, the company provides additional insurance for a year, they change at their own expense a screen that has failed for any reason, including mechanical damage. And so they are trying to reduce the number of hits in every possible way, because the screen is the most expensive part of the device.

During the first year in an authorized service, you can replace the film with a new one, you can do it for free. I did not need to change the film, it remains almost the same as before. At the place of the fold, it departs a little, but it does not irritate me, it does not cause any discomfort. Moreover, she began to depart about a month ago, that is, nothing like this was observed for eight months.

The mechanical strength of the Fold is excellent, I dropped the device several times at home, in the car, I didn’t do it on purpose. Considering the cost of the smartphone, every time my heart skipped a beat, I thought that everything was lost. You take it in your hand, open it and you understand that there is not a scratch on it. My friends have a similar situation, the maximum where you can find traces of falls is on the sash, the metal gets combat marks (I don’t have them, so I can’t show them).

Because the camera block on the back panel protrudes, I use a case, more precisely, it is a leather overlay. I chose a branded “case” from Samsung, of course, its cost corresponds to the price of the device, I have to put up with it. During this time, the cover was wiped off, but this is normal for the skin, there is nothing new here.

The ergonomics of the smartphone does not cause me any questions, it fits easily in the hand when closed, you need to hold the open smartphone with both hands if you want to do something on it. You need to open it with two hands, you can close it with one if you wish.

External screen, use on the go

The design of the Fold itself is such that you need to understand: you have two devices in your hands, which differ greatly in how you use them and what they give you. When closed, the Fold can be considered an ordinary smartphone, even if it is a bit thick. But it can be controlled with one hand, typing on the go, see what was sent to you in messages or instant messengers.

Exactly the same way you answer calls, put it closed to your ear (I almost always have headphones outside, so I don’t do this). In the open state, you will speak on the speakerphone.

Several times I heard correspondence reviews that the Fold is inconvenient on the street, since it is inconvenient to open it on the go, people believe that it can be dropped. The value of these reviews is doubtful, since they are from those who have never used the Fold in real life, at most held it in their hands once or twice. On the street there is no need for an internal screen, you can do everything on the outside, there are no restrictions for this - maps, all the applications that you need are displayed on the screen. Yes, the external screen is obviously smaller than the internal one, but so what? You do not watch movies on it, but simply look at the same map that you need when moving through the streets of an unfamiliar city.

The keyboard on the external screen is small, but you quickly get used to it, continuous typing allows you to type text with high quality (you won’t write treatises for sure).

Now a couple of words about the fact that you can open the device not only in its entirety, but it can occupy intermediate positions. This is useful when you want to place the device on a table, such as during a video call.

I use this feature from time to time, especially when I don't need to look at the screen (many conference calls do just that, nothing is shown on the screen except the speaker's face). Every application you can imagine is supported.

Another important point that is not obvious, here everyone comes up with for themselves what to do. There is a fingerprint sensor on the side surface, you can use it to unlock the device. But I have a face unlock, it works quickly and reliably. So, you can open the device and look at it, then it will be unlocked. And you can look at it in the closed state and open the already unlocked Fold, I like this option. Why? Probably because you don’t need to wait about a second for unlocking after opening, and you immediately have everything you need before your eyes.

In the settings, you can specify that when you close your smartphone, certain applications will continue to run on the external screen. For example, after I get directions at home and check the travel time, I close Fold, but it won't be locked because Google Maps will start showing up on the external screen. This is very convenient, as you choose which content and which applications to transfer to the external screen, and which not. That is, this is really the concept of two smartphones combined in one shell. It seems like nonsense, but in practice it gives huge advantages, there is simply nothing similar in the world of ordinary smartphones.

Ideally, you need to understand that the Fold gives you two devices in one: in the closed state - a regular smartphone, in the open state - like a tablet, where you can comfortably work with different applications on a large screen diagonal.

About memory, performance and running time

Before talking about working with the Fold in the open state, I want to dwell on some technical characteristics and little things that you will not find out in any way, except when using the device in practice. I'll start with the amount of internal memory, it is 256 GB here, and there is no way to expand the memory, memory cards are not supported. The approach taken by Samsung in flagships is understandable, but I would like to get an alternative. In the first Fold, the basic version was originally 512 GB, which is good, and there was always enough memory. My Fold is always running out of memory, although, in fairness, these are all the series that I can’t finish watching and are constantly distracted by something, there are about 100 GB of them. It is necessary, of course, to clear my memory, but my hands still do not reach, I constantly put off this moment.

Smartphone performance does not raise any questions, everything flies, as on the first day, although there are many applications. Nothing crashes, 12 GB of RAM is enough for applications to hang in memory, which means that the transition to them was as fast as possible. After Fold, it is very difficult to use other devices, and this is not the speed of opening applications, their reactions are plus or minus the same. This is precisely the speed of re-navigating between applications that are already open.

The operating time of the Fold2 with my merciless use is up to about 7-8 pm from early morning, which starts at 6-7 o'clock for me. During this time, I get a screen time of 6-7 hours (mostly the internal screen), almost constantly on a 4G connection. It should be noted that I rarely do not charge the phone during the day, as I am used to recharging devices not at the moment of full discharge, but from time to time - in the car, in the office, somewhere else. For a full-time job, it is enough easily, there is nothing to complain about. Full charge time is about 1.5 hours, there is wireless charging, which I usually use in the car, but, of course, it is inferior in speed to wired.

Among the features of the device, I want to note how the battery indicator works. You can believe the indications up to a certain point, as soon as you reach 5% charge, the battery immediately melts before your eyes, the device suddenly turns off. What this is connected with is not entirely clear, but it is worth keeping it in mind.

This is a flagship in every sense, so there are no complaints here, top-level performance, convenience and quality are maximum.

The device has very loud speakers, the ringer is vociferous, but I have a silent mode. I did not find any patterns, but in a number of programs the volume level is limited, it is impossible to fix this. For example, in toys the volume is maximum, but in MX Player everything is not so, although everything sounds good. The same story in Skype and Zoom, the speaker is limited in volume. There are no settings for this, the pattern is also incomprehensible. In a word, miracles, and only, everything is fine in all Samsung applications, there are no complaints.

Flagship level cameras - yes or no?

A question that is also often asked is how does the Fold2 take pictures, is it really good or not? The cameras in the Fold2 are flagship-level, although it's not entirely clear what is hidden behind this ornate marketing term. I have two permanent devices - Galaxy S21 Ultra and Fold2, I usually take pictures at the first, since the level of cameras on it is higher, there is an optical zoom x3 and x10. But the Fold2 shoots gorgeous by any measure, and if you're not a photography enthusiast like me, then you'll have enough of its capabilities for the eyes. It is difficult to scold the Fold2 cameras, they give very, very high-quality pictures, and also shoot videos well. However, look at the sample photos of this device for yourself.

Internal screen - tablet mode, working tool

I had a tablet, but with the advent of the first Fold, I completely stopped using it. The reason is simple: you need to carry it with you, but the Fold fits in your jeans pocket. Yes, the Fold does not have the largest screen, it has an unusual 4 by 3 geometry, but it is still a huge screen that fits a lot of data. Look at my calendar, no device has such a detailed view.

And that's a huge benefit of the Fold, you get a big screen in a compact package. You can also bend the device to get new modes of operation, such as watching videos or taking pictures.

This is not something you use every day, but from time to time you need such chips, but here they are. The main thing, however, is a large screen that allows you to see more. Watching movies on the screen is good, despite the fact that there are stripes on the sides. Alas, the original geometry is exactly like that, there is no escape from it.

Given the cost of the smartphone, every time my heart skipped a beat, I thought that everything was gone. You take it in your hand, open it and you understand that there is not a scratch on it. My friends have a similar situation, the maximum where you can find traces of falls is on the sash, the metal gets combat marks (I don’t have them, so I can’t show them).

Since the camera block on the back is protruding, I use a case, more precisely, it's a leather overlay. I chose a branded “case” from Samsung, of course, its cost corresponds to the price of the device, I have to put up with it. During this time, the cover was wiped off, but this is normal for the skin, there is nothing new here.

The ergonomics of the smartphone does not raise any questions for me, it fits easily in the hand when closed, you need to hold the open smartphone with both hands if you want to do something on it.

On the side surface there is a fingerprint sensor, with its help you can unlock the device.

But the Fold2 shoots gorgeous by any standards, and if you're not a photography enthusiast like me, then you'll have enough of its capabilities for the eyes.

Alas, the original geometry is exactly like this, there is no escape from it.
