OnePlus One review

I usually start device reviews with a brief introductory part, but this is not required now. The site already has materials about OnePlus One, after reading which you can find out where this project came from and what expectations were from it in the first hours after the announcement.

OnePlus One

OnePlus One

A little looking ahead, I will say that the PR work done within the company has borne fruit - the whole world knows about OnePlus One today. Moreover, sometimes even people who do not closely follow the smartphone market. Previews and reviews on all major platforms, as well as heated discussions - all this is an indicator of popularity. Pete Lau, the founder of the project, or "startup" as the OnePlus One is also called, along with his team worked hard at the launch, and the months leading up to this event, and the initial sales by invitation only fueled interest in the device. Perhaps, in a different situation, such steps, on the contrary, would push people away from the smartphone, not only is it Chinese, but you can’t just buy it like that. But in favor of OnePlus One, two factors combined together played a very low cost with excellent performance. Hence the name "flagship killer".

OnePlus One

In this review, I will try to talk about all the features of the new smartphone, point out its strengths and weaknesses, and also share my subjective opinion about the new product. From time to time, I will refer to the smartphone as abbreviated as OPO (OnePlus One). Let's go.

Delivery set

I’ll note right away that if you buy a Chinese version of a smartphone, you will see two boxes in the kit - the main one, with the device and accessories, and the additional one, with the charging unit. At first glance, there is no difference between the international and Chinese versions. Although initially the Chinese version comes with ColorOS on board, in Russia it is usually sold already with CyanogenMod 11. At least in the online store where I took the smartphone for a test, the samples are already reflashed, in fact, the same international version is obtained with CM.

So, the extra box is the only thing you can find fault with in the package. Yes, there are no headphones here, but today manufacturers are less and less likely to put them in the kit for top-end smartphones, so I personally don’t consider this a drawback.

OnePlus One

The smartphone comes in a chic white box, inside of which there is a second red box, one "drives" into the other.

OnePlus One

The device itself is in a red box, as are the main complete accessories. The design of the box and the accessories themselves is beyond praise. If you sometimes order something from China, you probably caught yourself thinking that when you open a crumpled colorless box made of simple cardboard, it is difficult to expect a good device inside, even if you already know that it is really good. There are exceptions, these are the packaging of companies such as Oppo, Meizu and Xiaomi, where everything is done simply and tastefully, but the OnePlus One packaging is on a completely different level.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

Each element of the box, each accessory inside literally screams about how high-quality the product is in the hands. I mean it in all seriousness, if the “meet by the packaging and the accessories that came with it” rule applied to smartphones, OnePlus One would be among the leaders.

In addition to a smartphone, you will find:

  • Charging unit (in a separate box)
  • A set of paper instructions
  • USB to microUSB flat cable
  • SIM ejector clip (in rubber case)

Each element is thought out to the smallest detail and designed in the same way. Paper instructions are hidden in a neat red envelope.

The paperclip for extrusion of the microSIM tray is packaged in a neat red rubber case, so it will not be as easy to lose it as a paperclip in any other device.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

The USB-microUSB cable is thin, so it will not twist, and it can be quickly twisted into a small "sausage", there is a small clamp on the cable right away for convenient fixing it in a twisted state.

OnePlus One

I have already mentioned a separate box with a charging unit above. Both the box itself and the charger are designed for five points.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

For me personally, OnePlus One is one of the first smartphones, a positive impression of which begins to form even before the device itself is turned on, just after a cursory acquaintance with the packaging. And this despite the fact that there is a separate box for the charger and there are no headphones in the kit.

Design

You can describe the appearance of OnePlus One in a short phrase - simply and without pretensions. In short, concise. There are no original solutions here, except, perhaps, a small notch between the protective glass of the screen and the metal frame around it. It is difficult to show this feature in the photo, but I tried to find the angle:

OnePlus One

The shape of the body is simple, with a barely noticeable bend in the upper and lower ends, the back is also slightly curved, but this does not affect the comfort of the grip.

OnePlus One

I can’t say that the appearance of OnePlus One evokes something like “wow” for me, no, just a good, not terrible looking smartphone. I think most users will have a similar opinion - OnePlus One definitely cannot be called ugly or ugly, rather it simply will not cause any emotions, and someone will even like it because of its brevity in design.

Body materials

The smartphone is made of plastic. More precisely, magnesium alloy is used inside (something like a chassis on which the elements are located), but most of the visible body is plastic. There is also a protective glass and a thin metal frame around.

OnePlus One

The plastic in white OnePlus One is smooth, matte, pleasant to the touch and practical - traces and prints on it are invisible, scratches, even if they appear, will also not be evident. The black OnePlus One is made of plastic that feels rough to the touch, but otherwise the material is also practical, so choose carefully between colors, the texture of the cover will be different.

Assembly

The smartphone feels monolithic, although in practice the cover is removed even at home, but it is assumed that the user will not do this just like that, and the cover is, as it were, non-removable. Of the moving elements, there are only keys and a tray for a microSIM card. There are no complaints about the build quality - everything is at a high level, there are no gaps between the elements, the buttons are tightly fitted, nothing creaks.

Dimensions

A year ago, OnePlus One could be classified as a borderline category of so-called "phablets" (a very bad word), but today a smartphone with a screen diagonal of 5.5 '' is normal, whether some people like it or not. Personally, until recently, I absolutely could not accept the trend of increasing diagonals, but now, probably, I have reconciled. One way or another, OnePlus One is one of the largest smartphones on the market.

OnePlus One

Let's compare the dimensions of OPO and some other large devices:

  • Apple iPhone 5S - 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm, 112 grams
  • HTC One (M8) (5'') - 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm, 160 grams
  • LG G3 (5.5'') - 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm, 149 grams
  • Nokia Lumia 930 (5'') - 137 x 71 x 9.8 mm, 167 grams
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 (5.1'') - 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm, 145 grams
  • Sony Xperia Z2 (5.2'') - 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm, 163 grams
  • OnePlus One (5.5'') - 153 x 76 x 9 mm, 162 grams

OnePlus One

Compared to LG G3

OnePlus One

Compared to HTC One M8

When you pick up OnePlus One after any other smartphone, it seems huge. There is no point in inventing or smoothing something out here - the huge dimensions of the device are visible both “on paper” and in reality. Even the LG G3, which has a similarly sized 5.5" screen, is noticeably smaller than the OnePlus One.

In the hand, the smartphone lies, respectively, as comfortable as how large your hands are or how accustomed you are to overall devices. It fits in the pocket of trousers and jeans, but wearing OnePlus One in summer shorts will no longer be so comfortable.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

Dimensions are one of the main and few shortcomings of OnePlus One. If you have never used smartphones with large displays before, then before choosing OPO, you should hold it in your hands in a store (if you live in Moscow, you can do this even if you buy a gray device), or hold the same LG G3, Samsung Galaxy Note 3. So you can at least roughly imagine the dimensions of OnePlus One.

Controls

There is a minimum of controls - a short volume key on the left side, a power key on the right side and a block of touch buttons under the screen.

OnePlus One

Hardware volume and power buttons are not the most convenient, because they are thin and small. In addition, the keys barely protrude above the surface of the case. However, you quickly get used to them, and the power button is not used at all - the smartphone can be unlocked by double tapping on the screen.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

For the volume button when the tap is off, you can activate the music control mode when a long press of the up or down keys switches tracks. You can also enable on-screen buttons in the settings (what if they come in handy?).

On the front side, above the screen, there is a speaker, light and proximity sensors, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera (no autofocus) and a light indicator.

OnePlus One

We need to talk about the indicator light in more detail. The fact is that today it is less and less common to find this way of notifying about new events in smartphones, but in OnePlus One it is not only implemented, but implemented at the most powerful level. In the settings, you can set the basic indication for missed calls and voice mail, as well as add an indication for any installed application. This means you can set the LED to flash when you receive new messages, mail, notifications on Twitter, Instagram, calendar events, and more. At the same time, separately for each application, you can select the color of the blinking indicator, as well as the duration and speed of blinking.

Screen

OnePlus One uses an LTPS LCD screen with TOL (glass and sensor without air gap) technology. Display diagonal 5.5'', resolution 1920x1080 pixels, density 401 ppi. The screen is covered with protective glass Gorilla Glass 3. According to the main characteristics, brightness, viewing angles, color reproduction, the display can be safely called good. The viewing angles are maximum, the brightness margin is above average, the color reproduction is close to natural, there is no obvious distortion in too warm or too cold tones.

OnePlus One

However, if you don't like the OnePlus One's basic color reproduction, you can change it in the display settings. There are two preset modes, Standard and Vivid, as well as a custom mode with four manual adjustments: Hue, Saturation, Contrast, and Intensity. If you choose a bright mode, warm tones will prevail, I personally used the standard mode while using my OPO to write a review.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

There are discussions on the network about the problem of yellow screens in some individual samples of a smartphone, while for some the yellowness manifests itself clearly, for others, on the contrary, it is practically invisible. I tried to find this shortcoming in the sample I was reviewing by downloading the Display Tester application and running pictures of different colors. To be honest, I don’t even know if I eventually found the problem or not, after first reading a couple of dozen pages of discussion of the problem, and then launching a black picture on a smartphone and looking at it for a couple of minutes, you involuntarily begin to see yellowness in some areas. Or don't start, I don't know. I want to say that if you turned on your smartphone, went to the menu, settings, changed the desktop picture a couple of times and returned to it, and after all these manipulations you don’t see any obvious yellow spots, everything is probably fine with the sample , as in my case.

I decided to compare the display of the OnePlus One (right/top) with that of the LG G3. It is clear that the comparison is not entirely correct, yet the G3 has a higher resolution, but both displays have the same diagonal, so it is appropriate to compare them.

Overall, the display on the OnePlus One is very good in my opinion. Here is the resolution that is most suitable for this diagonal (I think the transition to Quad HD is superfluous), maximum viewing angles, a margin of brightness, the ability to manually adjust.

Camera

OnePlus One main camera - 13-megapixel, Sony Exmor IMX 214 sensor, six lenses, f/2.0 aperture. The maximum image resolution is 4208x3120 pixels.

Near the main camera https://cars45.com.gh/listing/bmw/f-series/ 2015 has a dual LED flash that can be used as a flashlight.

OnePlus One

Settings are collected in three tabs: camera, video, general. In the Camera, you select the resolution, image quality, focus mode, ISO value, metering type, and several other parameters. In Video resolution, video and audio codecs (available MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 for video and AAC, AMR-NB for audio), as well as slow motion, 60 or 120 frames per second. In the "General" tab, you can enable shooting by the volume button, control the volume keys by zooming, as well as left-handed mode, so that all keys in the viewfinder mode are located to the left of the center of the screen, and not to the right.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

The quality of the pictures, in my opinion, is above average, although if you compare the device with the LG G3, which has one of the best cameras, you can see the lag. When comparing the OPO camera with Sony and HTC smartphones, you will not notice such a difference, and certainly the camera in OnePlus One cannot be called typical for a Chinese smartphone, in terms of image quality, the device is comparable to other flagships, although not all.

The smartphone has a built-in standard photo editor of the Android system. In it, you can automatically improve the image, as well as change it manually. Among other things, cropping, image rotation and many filters are available. You can also change the brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, color temperature of the entire image or selected areas. Moreover, on the frame there can be as many separate sections of the radius of your choice as you like, for each of which you are free to select individual settings. You can also change the sharpness of the frame and add one of the effects to it: vintage, drama, black and white, HDR effect, retrolux, frames, shift and tilt. Within each effect, dozens of options and settings for each of them are available.

Video. The maximum recording quality is 4K DCI (4096 by 2160 pixels), the standard is FullHD (1920x1080), there are video recording modes at 60 and 120 frames per second. Tracking autofocus in the current firmware versions for OPO is not provided, only an ordinary one, which can be changed by tapping on the screen. The quality of the video is generally not bad in my opinion, but you can evaluate it yourself.

The front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels in a smartphone without autofocus is the most common. You can take pictures of your loved one or use it for Skype video calls, for example. The quality is typical for the front camera, higher than usual, the resolution does not matter.

I'll note right away that if you buy a Chinese version of a smartphone, you will see two boxes in the kit - the main one, with the device and accessories, and the additional one, with the charging unit.

Yes, there are no headphones here, but today manufacturers are less and less likely to put them in the kit for top smartphones, so I personally don’t consider this a drawback.

On the left edge there is also a slot for microSIM cards. To remove the card tray, you need to use the supplied paperclip.

OnePlus One

At the top end there is an additional microphone ("noise reduction") and a 3.5 mm mini-jack for headphones. On the bottom there are stereo speaker grilles and a microUSB connector, as well as the main microphone.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

The buttons below the display are blue backlit, from left to right are the Menu, Home, Back keys. For the backlight, you can set the duration of the work, from 1 second to 30, or the “Do not turn off” mode. For the Home and Menu keys, you can set additional actions for long holding the button or double pressing. Accordingly, we get six actions for two keys, three for each. True, the ability to select assigned actions is small, these can be actions from the following list: launching the application menu, launching the open programs manager, searching, voice search, searching in applications and activating the camera.

OnePlus One OnePlus One

For the volume button when the tap is off, you can activate the music control mode when a long press of the up or down keys switches tracks. Also in the settings you can enable on-screen buttons (what if they come in handy?).

This means you can set the LED to blink when you receive new messages, mail, notifications on Twitter, Instagram, calendar events, and more.

There are discussions on the net of the problem of screen yellowness in some individual smartphone samples, while for some the yellowness appears clearly, for others, on the contrary, it is practically invisible.

The smartphone has a built-in standard Android system photo editor. In it, you can automatically improve the image, as well as change it manually. Among other things, cropping, image rotation and many filters are available. You can also change the brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, color temperature of the entire image or selected areas. Moreover, the frame can have as many separate sections of the radius you choose, for each of which you are free to select individual settings. You can also change the sharpness of the frame and add one of the effects to it: vintage, drama, black and white, HDR effect, retrolux, frames, shift and tilt. Within each effect, there are dozens of options and settings for each of them.

Offline work

The smartphone has a Li-Pol battery with a capacity of 3100 mAh. On average, the charge is enough for the whole day, even with the active use of a smartphone with many hours of listening to music and shooting on the built-in camera

OnePlus One review

I usually start device reviews with a brief introductory part, but this is not required now. The site already has materials about OnePlus One, after reading which you can find out where this project came from and what expectations were from it in the first hours after the announcement.

In this review, I will try to tell you about all the features of the new smartphone, point out its strengths and weaknesses, and also share my subjective opinion about the new product. From time to time, I will refer to the smartphone as abbreviated as OPO (OnePlus One). Let's go.
