Review of smartphone Honor 9 (STF-L09)

A successful continuation of the Honor line of the middle class with the technical parameters of top A-brand devices. This time the device has not received the most significant changes compared to the previous generation, but some things inspire confidence: its own improved processor with a new graphics core, an improved camera module, improved battery life and a slightly changed design plus new colors.

The Honor 9 is available in two versions - regular (4/64 GB) and Premium (6/128 GB). The first one will cost you 27,000 rubles, and the premium version will cost you 32,000 rubles. When purchasing devices through the official website, you get Honor Sport wireless headphones as a gift (the Premium gadget also has a cool Huawei AF15 monopod tripod).

Design, dimensions, controls

In general, the appearance of Honor 9 is not much different from the appearance of Honor 8. That is, without comparing the two devices, it is difficult to quickly understand which gadget is which. However, in the ninth version, the back part was slightly rounded towards the side faces - a kind of tribute to the fashion in the Edge style. This was done in Xiaomi and some other companies, but Samsung can be considered the ancestor, however, there the edges were “wrapped” on the front side. As they say "stylish, fashionable, youth."

Honor 9 Honor 9

The glass is still Corning Gorilla Glass. In this model, this is the third generation with "Native Damage Resistance" technology.

Honor 9 Honor 9

As for the color solutions, Honor 9 has some dark ones: black, gray and blue. Let me remind you that Honor 8 is available in blue, white, gray, gold and even pink. If color is important to you, then you should think about buying a G8.

Naturally, metal is also present - a frame around the perimeter of the gadget.

The dimensions of Honor 9 are almost the same as in Honor 8 - 147.3 x 70.9 x 7.45 mm, weighs 155 grams. Very comfortable to handle: even the more compact Huawei P10 does not fit as nicely in the hand as the new one.

Most likely, due to the sloping edges of the back panel. Oddly enough, the "nine" does not slip, even if the hands are wet. Alas, there is no protection against water and dust, but it would be great!

Honor 9

On the top of the front of the device: selfie camera, sensors, missed events indicator, earpiece. I've tested about 100 smartphones over the last year and can't highlight https://cars45.com/listing/honda/odyssey/2000< /a> at least three or four models where the speaker would be ideal. The exception is the Samsung Galaxy S8. Its speaker has excellent voice quality - loud and clear. The rest of the devices (including budget ones) are equipped, in my opinion, plus or minus the same speakers.

Honor 9

Under the screen - touch buttons "Back" and "Menu" (they are easy to swap), and in the center is a fingerprint sensor with a built-in button "Back" (not mechanical). It seems to me that the best location for the scanner is at the back. Probably because I do not use this thing at all and I feel sorry for wasting space under the display in any way.

Honor 9

On the bottom are a standard headphone jack, USB-C, and a speakerphone. The power button and volume rocker are on the right, and on the left is a typical SIM/memory card combo slot. Above - the second microphone and IR transmitter.

On the reverse side, from above, there are two camera modules flush with the body, a double LED flash of warm and cold glow, a laser focusing system.

Display

This product uses a 5.15-inch screen. The physical size is 64x114 mm, the frame is 16 mm on the top, 17 mm on the bottom, and about 3 mm on the right and left. There is an anti-reflective coating, effective.

The Honor 9 display resolution is FullHD, that is, 1920x1080 pixels, the aspect ratio is 16:9, and the density is 423 pixels per inch. IPS (LTPS LCD TFT) matrix without air gap.

Maximum brightness of white color is 400 cd/m2, maximum brightness of black color is 0.41 cd/m2, contrast ratio is 975:1.

The brightness graph is within the normal range, the gamma is average (around 2.18), judging by the color levels, there is a clear dip in red, the temperature is in the range of 10400 - 8700 K. The data obtained exceed the values of the sRGB triangle. This suggests that the colors will be very saturated and bright, like an AMOLED matrix.

The Honor 9 matrix has excellent performance, the only negative is the change in temperature.

The device has an eye protection mode that reduces the level of UV radiation from the screen and prevents eye fatigue during prolonged use of the smartphone.

Аккумулятор

В данной модели используется несъемный литий-ионный (Li-Ion) аккумулятор емкостью 3200 мАч.

Honor 9

Communications

The device works not only in 2G networks (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)/3G (HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps), but also in 4G CAT 6: 4G FDD LTE:Band 1/3/5/7 /8/20

Honor 9

The gadget has implemented the "Signal+" function - it improves the quality of signal reception. Another feature is Wi-Fi +. The gadget automatically connects to the most stable and powerful network (either mobile data or Wi-Fi).

Honor 9

There is also NFC (payment for purchases at the checkout works), the rest is standard for any expensive Android smartphone: GPS and GLONASS, Wi-Fi b / g / n (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.2 BLE, USB 2.0 with OTG support.

Honor 9

The IR transmitter can be used as a remote control. There is a proprietary program for this.

Honor 9 Honor 9 Honor 9

Memory and memory card

RAM 4 GB LPDDR4, and internal memory can be 64 GB. Read speed - 195 MB / s, write - 229 MB / s, these are excellent indicators for a device up to 30,000 rubles. Memory cards up to 128 GB are supported.

Honor 9 Honor 9 Honor 9

Cameras

We are again met by two cameras. This time, Huawei has used a new black and white camera module (the main one is still color). Let me remind you that such an implementation is necessary to achieve a greater dynamic range: the details in the shadows and in the bright areas are well-detailed. To put it simply - a kind of analogue of natural HDR. However, frankly, I did not see any difference in frames on ASUS 3 Zoom, Nova 2, Nova 2 Plus and Huawei P10.

Honor 9

It is interesting that the monochrome module has a resolution of 20 MP, and the color module has a resolution of 12 MP. In the settings, you cannot select the resolution of the cameras individually, however, in color, the photo goes to 12 MP automatically, but in monochrome mode - 20 MP.

Both cameras are equipped with f=2.2 aperture optics. Actually, not much. I would like at least f=2.0. For more accurate focusing in low light, there is a laser focus system. Double flash - warm and cold glow.

The front camera is 8 MP, and the aperture is f=2.0.

Honor 9

In good light, the Honor 9 can capture great shots with accurate white balance, good sharpness and detail. If we compare the Honor 9 module and Huawei P10, the latter has fewer artifacts, a cleaner picture, and nicer bokeh. At night, the picture on the Honor 9 is more noisy, but in terms of details, it is similar to the P10, oddly enough. Apparently, the software algorithms in Huawei P10 work to “clean up” the picture.

The focus speed of the Honor 9 is unquestionable, the accuracy is on top.

As for background blurring, so far none of the devices (of those that I have tested) are able to cope with their task normally and 100%. However, if you really want to, then you can carry out this “operation” as smoothly as possible: you need to adapt to select the desired focus and continue to “play” with bokeh, since the software allows you to do this even after taking a photo.

If we are talking about the signature feature of HybridZoom, then you should understand that this technology uses digital zoom. Then the software somehow improves the image quality (most likely due to the high resolution of the second camera), and we get a generally good picture with a twofold increase. However, the zoom only works at resolutions less than 20 MP.

Video can be recorded up to 4K at 30 fps (H.265, 30 Mbps). The picture is beautiful, the sound is clear. Focus works instantly.

The front camera is wide-angle. The image quality is excellent, it’s not even entirely clear why ASUS released the Zenfone 4 Selfie if the Honor 9’s regular camera is enough for the eyes. In order to achieve the most correct picture, the smartphone must be held almost at arm's length. The fact is that the "fixed" optics has a focus at a distance of about 40 cm, and then the picture is a little soapy. The screen backlight is used as a flash.

Honor 9 has built-in Live Photos feature. To activate a chip, you must click on the corresponding icon. Then you take a photo and open it, hold your finger on the screen and see a short video a second before and after taking the picture.

В режиме «Pro» выбираются ISO (50 - 3200), выдержка (1/4000 – 30 сек), фокус и баланс белого.

Performance

The "heart" of the device is a proprietary chipset - HiSilicon Kirin 960: 16 nm (FinFET Plus), eight-core, 64-bit, 4 Cortex-A73 cores (2.4 GHz) and 4 Cortex-A53 cores (1.8 GHz) , graphics Mali G71 MP8. In addition to the eight main cores, the chipset uses an i6 coprocessor. The coprocessor reduces power consumption by 75% when the tracker is on and by 40% when counting steps. The chip also supports two cameras, electronic stabilization of 4K video. Another feature of the Kirin 960 is the Hi6403 dedicated sound chip, which supports high-end 32bit/192kHz and DSD formats in hardware.

Honor 9

I think it's not worth saying that Honor 9 is very fast and bug-free. The phone has no problems with games and other applications. Under load, the smartphone case practically does not heat up.

Honor 9 Honor 9 Honor 9 Honor 9< /p>

It seemed to me that Honor 9 behaves faster than Huawei P10.

Software platform

The gadget operates on the operating system Google Android version 7.0. There is a proprietary EMUI 5.1 shell, so there is practically nothing left of the "seven".

Multimedia

Honor 9 has one speaker for speakerphone output. The speaker is of high quality, it sounds nice, but its volume is slightly above average.

Honor 9

The phone uses sound enhancement software called Huawei histen. It allows you to select the type of headphones, adjust the equalizer from 30 Hz to 16 kHz or select presets, set surround sound (when activated, the equalizer is turned off).

Honor 9 Honor 9 Honor 9 Honor 9 < img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/huawei/honor-9/scr/scr51.jpg" alt="Honor 9" width="315" height="560"/> Honor 9

The volume is very high, which is a plus. But the sound seemed ordinary to me: yes, you can choose different volume parameters or “play” with the equalizer, but I can’t say that the sound is outstanding.

There is no radio in this model.

Conclusion

“Pleasant, pleasant and once again pleasant” - with these words you can end the review of Honor 9. The company managed to make the case and software so well, to achieve such a speed that the smartphone did not want to let go of hands: smooth, cute, with a fast processor and fast interface, takes great pictures, and the screen pleases the eye with juicy color reproduction.

At the moment, the cost of the device is 27,000 rubles (when buying through the official store - wireless headphones as a gift (they cost 3,000 rubles separately)).

I see the main competitor here in the face of Xiaomi Mi6. Overpaying 3,000 rubles, you will receive a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and as much as 6 GB of RAM. If in Honor 9 the cameras have the same focal length, then in Mi6 one of the lenses is equipped with a 2x zoom.

There is also a Meizu Pro 7 smartphone for 30,000 rubles with an additional screen on the back. As an option - Huawei Nova 2 for 24,000 rubles, but it has a number of nuances. If there is not enough money, take a closer look at Honor 8 for 22,000 rubles.

This model uses a 3200 mAh non-removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery.

Honor 9

In my work mode, the gadget functioned for 30 hours (from 9 am to 2 am, then the “sleep” of the gadget and again from 9 am to 1 pm – 2 pm): about 30-40 minutes of calls, constant synchronization with Wi-Fi (9.00 - 02.00, Twitter, mail, Skype, Whatsapp), a couple of hours of LTE. The glow of the screen in this mode is 3.5 hours on average.

With games, the situation is a little worse: the battery runs out after 3-4 hours of continuous "battle". Video device "twists" for about 7 hours (HD). One to one indicators of the previous generation.

Battery

"A powerful 3200 mAh battery and Smart Power 5.0 energy-saving technology ensure a long battery life for Honor 9. For example, a smartphone supports up to 78 hours of offline music playback. 9V 2A SuperCharge fast charging technology allows you to charge your smartphone from 0% to 40% charge within half an hour.

Cameras

We are again greeted by two cameras.

The image quality is excellent, it’s not even entirely clear why ASUS released the Zenfone 4 Selfie if the regular Honor 9 camera is enough for the eyes.

Pro mode selectable ISO (50 - 3200), shutter speed (1/4000 - 30 sec), focus and white balance.

The company managed to make the case and software so well, to achieve such a speed that the smartphone did not want to let go of hands: smooth, nice, with a fast processor and fast interface, takes great pictures, and the screen pleases the eye with rich color reproduction.

However, in the ninth version, the back part was slightly rounded towards the side edges - a kind of tribute to the fashion in the Edge style. This was done in Xiaomi and some other companies, but Samsung can be considered the ancestor, however, there the edges were “wrapped” on the front side. As they say "stylish, fashionable, youthful".

The glass is still Corning Gorilla Glass. In this model, this is the third generation with "Native Damage Resistance" technology.
