Acer Liquid Jade review

This device was first shown at IFA 2014, and almost immediately after the exhibition, it came to me for review. Having been with him for more than a month, I would like to talk about his strengths and weaknesses.

Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

To say something special about the appearance of Acer Liquid Jade is rather problematic. In terms of design, this is an ordinary ordinary smartphone, but it looks attractive due to several features. Firstly, in the off state, the frames merge with the screen, it seems that the screen occupies the entire front panel. Secondly, the device is very thin, and this is also part of the overall impression of its appearance. And thirdly, Jade has pretty thin bezels, it also always looked nice.

But what I did not like at all was the easily soiled glossy back panel. Perhaps Acer is the last one I expected to see such an implementation from. The company has been famous for its practical case materials since the days of the Acer Iconia Tab A500 (and even before). And although the plastic is easily soiled and glossy, it’s good that the device itself does not slip in your hand.

Acer Liquid Jade

On the front side there is a speaker, a front camera, as well as light and proximity sensors. The bottom buttons are part of the screen, but the manufacturer decided to put their logo below the screen.

Acer Liquid Jade Acer Liquid Jade

The power button and 3.5mm jack are on top, the volume rocker is on the left, and the microUSB port and microphone hole are on the bottom. I didn't like the buttons in the device either (although I usually always praise Acer on this point). They are thin and uncomfortable, in addition, the power button could also be placed on the right.

Acer Liquid Jade Acer Liquid Jade

On the right side you can see a hidden tray for a SIM card and a memory card. Interestingly, two versions will be on sale: SIM + microSD and DualSIM, we had the first one on hand.

Acer Liquid Jade Acer Liquid Jade

On the (glossy!) back there is a 13 MP main camera and a hole in the main speaker. He, by the way, has an excellent volume margin, and he sounds pretty good. Since we are talking about the sound, at the same time I note that the vibration alert of the device is very strong, you can easily understand that someone called you if the smartphone is in your pocket.

Acer Liquid Jade Acer Liquid Jade

There are no special complaints about the assembly, the device is perfectly assembled, there are no backlashes and squeaks.

Dimensions

< /tr>
Height (mm) Width (mm) Thickness (mm) Weight (grams)< /td>
Acer Liquid Jade 140.5 69 7.5 110
Asus Padfone E 139.6 69.7 9.08 126
Asus Zenfone 5 148.2 72.8 9 140
Huawei Honor 3C 139.5 71.4 9.2 140
Lenovo Vibe X 144 71 6.9 120

Dimensions are one of the key advantages of Jade. Pay attention to the thickness and especially the weight of the model, in the hand it feels very thin and light. And the small bezels made it possible to fit a five-inch display into a more compact case, it would be especially appropriate to compare the dimensions of the Jade with the dimensions of the Zenfone 5, which is significantly thicker and heavier.

Screen

Characteristic Value
Screen diagonal 5 inches
Display resolution 1280x720 dots
PPI value 294
Matrix type IPS
Protective coating Glass
Oleophobic coating Present
Auto brightness control Present
Multi-touch support Present, up to ten simultaneous touches

First of all, I note that there is no air gap in the display used, which has a positive effect on the quality of the picture, as well as its brightness and clarity. Secondly, there is a wonderful oleophobic coating here, the finger glides remarkably over the screen surface. And finally, I will say that the screen boasts good viewing angles. The image is inverted only when viewing the screen diagonally.

Acer Liquid Jade

In the sun, the display, of course, fades, but remains readable, but I would make the minimum brightness level even lower for more comfortable reading in the dark.

Operating system

The device runs Android 4.4.2 with a few proprietary additions from Acer. I have already talked about them several times, so I will not repeat myself, but will refer you to the corresponding article:

Acer Liquid Jade

In addition to the additions described in that review, this smartphone also has support for Acer EXTEND, with this application you can broadcast the smartphone's image to your monitor and work with it. To do this, you will need to download the appropriate utility. Interestingly, unlike the Asus application, Acer EXTEND can broadcast an image both in wired and wireless modes, which, you see, is a significant plus. True, you still can’t play games in this mode, but you can type a large SMS message comfortably on your computer.

Characteristic Value
Battery capacity 2100 mAh
Battery type Non-removable, lithium-ion
Hours of HD video playback at maximum brightness ( airplane mode on) 6 hours 15 minutes
Time to read at 30% brightness (airplane mode on) 10 hours 40 minutes

Battery capacity, by today's standards, can already be called modest, and, nevertheless, the smartphone works perfectly all day in mixed mode (music, twitter, mail, web surfing, instant messengers, the total screen activity is about three hours). There is a separate power-saving mode that turns on automatically when the smartphone's battery is low.

Camera

The resolution of the main camera is 13 MP, the maximum video resolution is FullHD, the sound is recorded in stereo mode, there is a focus by pressing. As for photography, the pictures are, let's say, normal, the camera does not have enough stars from the sky. Below you can see examples of smartphone photo and video shooting.

Мобильные данные GSM 900/1800/1900, 3G
USB On-The-Go Нет

Conclusion

There are certain complaints about the quality of voice transmission. The voice of your interlocutor is deaf, other subscribers also complained about my voice when I was talking on this smartphone, keep this in mind.

The recommended retail price of Acer Liquid Jade is 11,000 rubles. For this money, you get a very thin and light smartphone with an excellent quality display and a good shell. All the splendor is spoiled by slowdowns when paging, poorly working GPS and voice quality. In addition, Liquid Jade has two very strong competitors.

Acer Liquid Jade

Asus ZenFone 5. Due to the rising dollar, this smartphone has risen in price to 9,000 rubles for the regular version and 10,500 rubles for the version with LTE support. On the side of the Asus smartphone, there is better GPS, a more functional and finished shell, better speed and better case materials. However, this smartphone is too big for its screen diagonal, and here it is worth remembering the advantages of Acer Liquid Jade - size and weight. In terms of screen quality and oleophobic coating, both are also better on Jade.

Asus ZenFone 5

Acer Liquid Jade

Lenovo Vibe X. A formidable competitor from Lenovo for 10,000 rubles. It has a better screen, similar dimensions, but there is no slot for a memory card. In terms of slowdowns, these devices have parity, the quality of materials is better with Lenovo, GPS is equally bad for both.

Lenovo Vibe X

In my opinion, Asus Zenfone 5 looks like a more balanced option. Everything is +/- good in it, but Jade has certain distortions, for example, the materials of the case are no good (although let's be honest, the case partially solves this problem), the GPS works really badly, and the lags are very frustrating. But its positive aspects are also much more significant - we are, of course, talking about excellent dimensions and weight, as well as a very good display (it is much better than the Zenfone 5). And it seems that the choice for the user should be very difficult, only the regular version of Zenfone 5 costs 9,000 rubles versus 11,000 rubles for Liquid Jade, so the end user is likely to stop at the first one. In order for Jade to have more chances to compete with the Zenphone, it needs to have at least the same price, and then the buyer will already begin to think what is more important to him - speed, functional shell and high-quality case materials or compact dimensions and an excellent display.

Acer Liquid Jade review

This device was first shown at IFA 2014, and almost immediately after the exhibition, it came to me for review. Having been with him for more than a month, I would like to talk about his strengths and weaknesses.

Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

To say something special about the appearance of Acer Liquid Jade is quite problematic.

On the front side there is a speaker, a front camera, as well as light and proximity sensors. The bottom buttons are part of the screen, but the manufacturer decided to put their logo below the screen.

On the right side you can see a hidden tray for a SIM card and a memory card. Interestingly, two versions will be on sale: SIM + microSD and DualSIM, we had the first one on hand.

There are no special complaints about the assembly, the device is perfectly assembled, there are no backlashes and squeaks.

Dimensions

Height (mm) Width (mm) Thickness (mm) Weight (grams) Acer Liquid Jade 140.5 69 7.5 110 Asus Padfone E 139.6 69.7 9.08 126 Asus Zenfone 5 148.2 72.8 9 140 Huawei Honor 3C 139.5 71.4 9.2 140 Lenovo Vibe X 144 71 6.9 120

Screen

Characteristic Value Screen diagonal 5 inches Display resolution 1280x720 pixels PPI value 294 Matrix type IPS Protective coating Glass Oleophobic coating Yes Automatic brightness control Yes Multi-touch support Yes, up to ten simultaneous touches

In addition to the additions described in that review, this smartphone also has support for Acer EXTEND, with this application you can broadcast the smartphone's image to your monitor and work with it. To do this, you will need to download the appropriate utility. Interestingly, unlike the Asus application, Acer EXTEND can broadcast an image both in wired and wireless modes, which, you see, is a significant plus. True, you still can’t play games in this mode, but you can type a large SMS message comfortably on your computer.

Performance

Characteristic Value Chipset MediaTek MT6582 Processor Quad-core, 1.3 GHz Video accelerator Mali-400MP2 RAM 1 GB Internal storage capacity 8 GB Memory card present, there is a "hot swap"

Once at IFA2014, Sergey Vilyanov noted that Acer really loves the MT6582 chipset, it seems that the company bought a large batch in bulk and now installs them in all devices. I agree with this observation and add my impressions of the speed of the smartphone to it.

Unfortunately, this chipset does not seem to have enough performance to scroll through the same desktops in a smooth mode without slowdowns. As for games, they work, but at medium settings, by the way, there are no slowdowns.

Offline work

Characteristic Value Battery capacity 2100 mAh Battery type Non-removable Li-ion Battery life in HD video mode at maximum brightness (Airplane mode enabled) 6 hours 15 minutes Reading time at 30% brightness (Airplane mode enabled) 10 hours 40 minutes

Battery capacity, by today's standards, can already be called modest, and, nevertheless, the smartphone works perfectly all day in mixed mode (music, twitter, mail, web surfing, instant messengers, the total screen activity is about three hours). There is a separate power saving mode that turns on automatically when the smartphone is low.

As I already noted, there are two versions of the smartphone - SIM + MicroSD and DualSIM. Interestingly, even if you have a version with one SIM card, the smartphone still writes you a notification that the second SIM card is not connected. GPS on MediaTek chipsets traditionally works poorly, a cold start can exceed two to three minutes.
