Motorola Moto G7 Play review

Before moving on to the positioning of a specific model, it is worth recalling the entire positioning of the Moto G7 line and Motorola in the Russian market as a whole. At the presentation of the line, it was noted that Motorola is guided by its loyal audience, which loves and appreciates the Motorola brand and has warm memories of it. This is what the main emphasis is on in promotion, and not on the best price-quality ratio, since the smartphone has strong competitors in this parameter. At the same time, the Moto G7 Play offers stock Android 9.0, a Type-C port, several interesting Motorola branded chips and practical case materials to the end buyer. To recap, this is a Motorola smartphone for those who want a Moto but aren't willing to pay more for more expensive models. On the other hand, the two previous relaunches of the brand have shown that there are no loyal customers left, and if you remove this part from the equation, then we have an ordinary Chinese smartphone on stock Android at an overpriced price.

Design, dimensions, controls

In almost every review of new Motorolas in recent years, I see negative comments about the design of smartphones. Readers have complained that the looks of the handsets are no longer as attractive as they used to be, and the company has lost a fair amount of charm because of this. And if in the case of Moto Z I agree with this, then specifically Moto G7 Play, in my opinion, looks great. Sloping edges, a plastic cover with a fine pattern, very pleasant to the touch, a logo beautifully inscribed in the fingerprint scanner. And most importantly, no imitation of Apple (except for the cutout in the display).

The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand, rounded corners play an important role in this, as well as an elongated display with an aspect ratio of 19:9. The dimensions of the smartphone are 147.3 x 71.5 x 8 mm, and the weight is 149 grams.

There is a Type-C port and a microphone on the bottom, an additional microphone and a headphone mini-jack on the top.

The earpiece, light and proximity sensors, front camera and flash are hidden in the display cutout. Separately, I note that the speaker is also external, which, in my opinion, is a huge minus.

There are no complaints about the assembly to the model, there are no backlashes, cracks and squeaks.

Display resolution 1512 x 720 dots
PPI value 294
Matrix type IPS
Protective coating Gorilla Glass 3
Oleophobic coating Yes
Auto brightness control Yes
Multitouch support Present, up to ten simultaneous touches

Display resolution is the main drawback of this model. For 13 thousand rubles you expect FHD resolution, especially since such models can already be found from other manufacturers. The low resolution is noticeable when reading small fonts and in the interface. On the other hand, it gives more run time and undemanding users will not pay attention to it . But I am demanding and I see this difference with the naked eye.

Motorola Moto G7 Play

The screen is quite average, at angles the picture looks less bright, and at right angles it feels like the display has an air gap. In the sun, the image fades almost completely, but at night it is more or less comfortable to use the screen.

The display supports the Always On function, you can quickly see the time, battery charge and recent notifications. By default, a short notification is shown. To read it without unlocking, you need to hold your finger on it.

In the display settings, you can choose not only the interface scale and font size, but also the color rendering.

Using time in HD video mode at maximum brightness ( airplane mode on) 10 hours
Sleep mode discharge (12 hours, display off, Wi-Fi on) 3 %

Other things being equal, the Moto G7 Play lasts longer than its competitors due to the fact that with a similar battery capacity it has a lower display resolution. You can count on four hours of display on with active mobile Internet, 60-70% brightness, using social networks, instant messengers, mail and activated synchronization. The smartphone supports fast charging, in half an hour it is charged by about 60%, a full charge takes an hour and a half.

It would seem that quite recently only Qualcomm 400-series chipsets were in this price segment, but now we often see smartphones based on the 600-series for 13 thousand. Pure Android 9.0 and a productive chipset give the G7 Play enough speed in the interface and third-party applications. The device heats up only in benchmarks. You may experience performance problems only in the most powerful games on the maximum graphics. Another important point: the smartphone has a separate slot for a memory card, and not a combined one, now you rarely see this.

The smartphone has support for VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling, both functions are already working in our country, in my case both technologies worked with the MTS operator. Interestingly, the radio in this smartphone works without headphones, or rather, like this: you can start a search, but without headphones that act as an antenna, nothing will be found. Moto is usually not greedy for wireless interfaces, but this model does not have an NFC module, alas.

Image quality is highly dependent on lighting conditions. So, during the day you get great shots with good detail, but as soon as you switch to artificial lighting, the situation deteriorates sharply, you can see a strong loss of detail, the picture is blurry, closer to the night the situation becomes even worse. The selfie camera is not bad, there is a front flash. The maximum resolution for video is up to 4k.

The camera interface is typical for Motorola devices, this is a concise application with all the necessary settings, there is a separate manual mode and detailed settings for photos and videos.

The external speaker is also a conversational speaker, which negatively affected the quality of music playback, the tracks wheeze at maximum volume and have a very mediocre sound.

The sound quality in the headphones is standard for this price segment, I will only note the presence of a minijack.

There are no complaints about voice transmission during calls, you and your interlocutor can hear each other perfectly.

Program features

The smartphone runs Android 9.0 and has a number of improvements from Motorola. Immediately, I note the inconvenient battery indicator. What prevented the numbers from being made to the left of the icon, like everyone else, is not clear.

The shell from Moto has many interesting features, we have already talked about them in a separate article, I recommend reading it, the link is below.

Motorola Moto G7 Play

In general, Motorola's add-ons fit seamlessly into stock Android. By the way, the company promises two major updates for the entire G7 line. By the way, I will single out face unlock as a pleasant detail, but you are immediately warned that this method is less reliable than a fingerprint scanner.

Impressions

In retail, this smartphone is sold for 13 thousand rubles. For this money, you get a device with a good design, a large display, support for VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling, separate slots for two SIM cards and a memory card, as well as pure Android 9.0. The main disadvantages of the model are the high price and low screen resolution.

Competitors

Samsung Galaxy A20. It costs about the same, but has a dual camera, a capacious 4000 mAh battery and 3 GB of RAM.

Redmi Note 7. Bigger battery, better display (higher resolution), more interesting design, at the same time a comparable price. A device of a completely different level for the same money.

Motorola Moto G7 Play

Honor 9 Lite. A still current bestseller from Honor: a great display (FHD resolution), good design and a dual camera.

Honestly, all three models look much better than the G7 Play, so I can only recommend this model if the price drops.

The smartphone supports fast charging, in half an hour it is charged by about 60%, a full charge takes an hour and a half.

Memory, chipset, performance

Specifications Value Chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 Processor Octa-core (4x1.8 GHz Kryo 250 Gold & 4x1.8 GHz Kryo 250 Silver) Video accelerator Adreno 506 RAM 2 GB Internal storage capacity 32 GB Memory card slot Yes, separate

Communications

Interfaces Availability Wi-Fi Yes, b/g/n/ac, Dual Band, Wi-Fi Calling Bluetooth Yes, 4.2, A2DP, LE GPS Cold start takes about 3 seconds Mobile data 2G: 850/900/1800/1900 3G: 850/900/1700/1900/2100 4G: b3/b7/b20/b38 Dual SIM, one VoLTE radio USB On-The-Go Yes NFC No Infrared No FM radio Yes

Camera

Specifications Value Main camera 13 megapixels, f/2.0 Front camera 8 megapixels, f/2.2

Multimedia Features

The main drawbacks of the model are the high price and low screen resolution.

Honor 9 Lite. A still current bestseller from Honor: a great display (FHD resolution), good design and a dual camera.

Honestly, all three models look much better than the G7 Play, so I can only recommend this model if the price drops.
