Pentax Optio W60 camera review

The letter index "W" in the name of Pentax models traditionally denotes belonging to the class of rugged, waterproof digital cameras. Not all manufacturers dare to implement devices of this kind, since the segment of secure digital compacts stands apart from all others. Theoretically, the additional protection of your favorite "digital soap box" may not be superfluous at all. In practice, however, it often turns out that the user prefers a camera that is either thinner, or brighter, or cheaper. A lover of digital photography will rather opt for an ultrazoom with good optics and stabilization, and protected from rain, dusty winds and other hardships of life, the compact will remain on the shelf.

Previous compacts of the "W" line did not differ in interesting or simply striking design. And the functional component was quite mediocre. The manufacturer made an unambiguous bet on the protection of the case. The model of the latest W60 line in this respect compares favorably with its younger brothers. You can pay attention to the camera without knowing that the case is protected. This is no longer just a silver rounded soap dish - there is a hint of sportiness in the details of the case.

To form the image, the manufacturer used the contrast of light and dark materials, the massiveness and solidity of individual body elements, large and contrasting font. The geometric shapes of the body are repeatedly emphasized by contour lines. Optio W60 is available in three colors.

W60 is not compact, which is not required for this positioning. Due to the tangible weight, the camera is comfortable to hold in your hands, all controls are spaced at a comfortable distance for control. There is a plastic finger rest on the front panel, but it does not play a role in the shooting process. This is explained by the fact that shooting with one hand is inconvenient - the camera outweighs to the left. Thus, the non-standard placement of the battery outside the stop line affects. Comfortable use of the camera is possible only with the use of both hands.

Most of the body of the camera is made of metal of different textures. Plastic is only used on the side, bottom and top panels. Consider the layout of the W60 controls.

Most of the front panel is occupied by the lens and the protected near-lens area. Above, at a sufficient distance from the optical center of the lens, there is a flash. Above the lens on the left is a self-timer diode. Unfortunately, there is no autofocus backlight.

The top panel of the camera has a traditional look. Here is the shutter button, power button, speaker and microphone holes.

The bottom panel contains a tripod mount and a battery cover. The socket is made of plastic and is located closer to the edge of the panel. This does not contribute to the stability of the camera on a tripod. However, Daewoo Matiz 2009 1.0 SE Red that a W60 user will often use a tripod is hard enough. On the opposite side is the battery cover. The security of the case implies the tightest possible fixation of all elements. That is why the opening mechanism requires some effort. To open, you need to unlock the plastic plug and push the cover sideways with force. Not very convenient, but with a certain amount of skill it turns out quickly. The internal fastening mechanism did not please. The problem is typical - the border of plastic coloring is visible, the fastening system, leaving no room for imagination, is perfectly visible.

Most of the camera controls are located on the back of the device. The main controls are represented by a five-way joystick, a menu button, a key for viewing images, a zoom rocker, a button that activates face priority, and a branded green key.

Except for the eyelet for attaching the lace, the side panels do not carry a functional load.

In general, the design of the W60 seems to be more interesting than previous models. There are no problems with ergonomics. However, a typical problem with the quality of the implementation of the battery cover has not been resolved.

Controls and menus

The Pentax control system is built traditionally logically. The main control element is a five-way joystick responsible for activating macro shooting, selecting flash modes, self-timer and selecting a scene program. The center position confirms the selected action.

All shooting parameters are configured in the "menu". The settings are divided into two tabs - shooting and settings. "Shooting" gives access to all the parameters and settings of the process. In the "Settings" tab, you can configure the camera's operating mode - sound, display settings, language, current time and date, and so on.

A branded solution in the implementation of control is the "green button". By default, it activates the "green mode", which allows users who are far from technical to cope with shooting in conditions of low complexity. In fact, this is an auto mode with standard settings that do not depend on the menu settings. If the user does not need the mode described above, he can personally assign one of the most essential functions to the "green button". This can be a change in resolution and quality of shooting, white balance, area and type of focus, exposure metering, ISO, exposure compensation, sharpness, saturation and contrast parameters. In photo browsing mode, activating the green key displays a menu that allows you to delete a single file or completely clear the memory.

Security

The degree of protection is the main highlight of the W60 positioning. The body of the camera, resistant to water and dust, allows you to shoot underwater without a box at a depth of up to 4 meters for two hours. Also, the camera is positioned as frost-resistant - it can withstand temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius.

Functional components and features

Matrix

The camera uses a 1/2.3" CCD sensor. The full resolution is 10.37 megapixels, of which 10 megapixels are effective. The image is recorded in JPEG format downsampled by six steps. Also, within the framework of three positions, the degree of image compression is adjusted.

The sensitivity range is represented by the following values: 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 and 6400. Above 400, the amount of noise is traditionally high. However, taking into account the possibility of underwater shooting, the presence of such overestimated values seems natural. At ISO 3200 and 6400, the image resolution is reduced to 5 megapixels.

Lens

It's nice that the standard of 3x optical zoom from most manufacturers is gradually being replaced by 5x. The W60 is no exception. The focal length of the lens is 5-25mm, which in terms of 35mm equivalent is 28.0 - 140.0mm. And such indicators speak of the wide-angle lens. Landscapes, panoramas and plans with a large number of participants will be more convenient to shoot. Lens aperture - f/3.5 - f/5.5.

Focus

The minimum autofocus distance of the W60 in standard mode is 50 centimeters. When macro mode is activated, the distance is reduced to 10 centimeters. In super macro mode, the camera can focus on the subject starting from 1 centimeter.

The camera has six focus modes. The very first focusing method, which is also the simplest and default, is autofocus. Next up are macro modes. A curious way of focusing is "pan focus". This is a mode in which "the camera does not need time to focus." The lens is placed at a hyperfocal distance, and everything from infinity to close foregrounds is in focus. It does not take time to focus. Next up is the infinity focus mode, which is essential for shooting landscapes. Completes the list of possible ways to focus "MF" - manual focus. Range from ten centimeters to infinity.

All the focus modes listed are typical for Pentax Optio.

In the children, sports, and pets scene, tracking focus is enabled by default. It is noteworthy that tracking focus can be turned on through the menu when working in any scene program.

Face priority and smile capture mode Smile capture is activated by a separate button on the rear panel.

Exposure compensation

Exposure can be adjusted in ± 2EV steps (1/3 increments). You can do this through the menu or using the quick access through the "green button".

Metering

Spot, center-weighted, matrix.

Display

The camera uses a standard 2.5" TFT monitor. The resolution is also classic - about 230 thousand pixels. The display has an excellent viewing angle and is equipped with a protective anti-reflective coating. A histogram, overexposed and underexposed areas are marked on the display during shooting. Also, text hints for all shooting and editing modes are activated in the menu.

Flash

Six total flash firing modes: auto, forced on/off, forced with red-eye protection, auto with red-eye protection, and soft mode. The last mode is a very useful solution, since the need to shoot close-up objects in low light conditions often arises.

Image stabilization

The Optio W60 features "Digital SR" digital image stabilization. It is activated through the scene programs menu. When selected, the camera raises the ISO sensitivity, increases noise reduction, and activates the Peaking Filter. In the process of video shooting, an electronic image stabilization system is also implemented.

Memory

Traditionally, the camera uses SD, SDHC memory cards. If necessary, you can use the built-in memory. In the camera it is about 36.4 MB.

Power, sync with PC

The camera is powered by a compact Li-Ion battery D-LI78 with a capacity of 680 mAh. Battery life on a single charge is about 210 shots (CIPA). The battery is charged using the supplied cradle.

Shooting modes

The scene mode menu has been redesigned. Icons have become brighter and more voluminous, new programs have been added.

The shooting modes of the Optio W60 are traditionally numerous. Of the main ones: night shooting, landscape, portrait with a “warm skin” filter and sports. Additional subjects: children, animals, fireworks, underwater photo, flowers, beach and snow, mid-range portrait, night portrait, text, still life, framed photo, sound recording, video and underwater video.

Noteworthy is the "digital panorama" mode. The camera stitches the pictures on its own, combining the elements into one widescreen frame.

Report mode reduces image resolution to 1.25 megapixels (1280x960). We wrote about "Digital SR" above.

Video recording

Video is recorded to an AVI (Motion JPEG) container with WAV audio. It is noteworthy that the maximum video recording resolution is 1280x720 (15 fps). The following modes are standard: 640x480 (30 fps, 15 fps), 320x240 (30 fps, 15 fps). It is possible to adjust the color mode. Through the video menu, autofocus, optical zoom and interval shooting are configured.

Post-processing

Possibilities for post-processing are as numerous as shooting modes. With the finished image, you can perform the following manipulations: sharpen, crop borders, reduce resolution, rotate, correct "red-eye", protect and restore from the trash. Numerous filters can also be applied to the photo. The W60 makes it easy to copy from camera memory to memory card and vice versa. Another option in the processing menu is the video editor. You can cut out the most valuable moment from the captured video, and save any of the frames of the video as a photo.

Output

Functionally, the Optio W60 is not inferior to most of the manufacturer's compacts. The wide angle and numerous functional adjustment possibilities are undeniable arguments in favor of the camera. But the design of the W60 can both attract and repel potential buyers. Sports styling strongly associates the camera with the rugged segment, placing the Optio W60 in this specific niche. The minimum cost of the camera in the network is 9800 rubles.

Previous compacts of the "W" line did not have an interesting or simply striking design.

Comfortable use of the camera is possible only when using both hands.

However, it is rather difficult to assume, Daewoo Matiz 2009 1.0 SE Red, that the W60 user will often use a tripod.

The image is recorded in JPEG format downsampled by six stops. The degree of image compression is also regulated within three positions.

The very first focusing method, which is also the simplest and the default, is autofocus. Next up are macro modes. A curious way of focusing is "pan focus". This is a mode in which "the camera does not need time to focus." The lens is placed at a hyperfocal distance, and everything from infinity to close foregrounds is in focus. It does not take time to focus. This is followed by the infinity focus mode, which is essential for shooting landscapes. Completes the list of possible ways to focus "MF" - manual focus. Range from ten centimeters to infinity.

All the listed focus modes are typical for Pentax Optio.

In the children, sports, and pets scenes, tracking focus is enabled by default.

The Optio W60 features the "Digital SR" digital image stabilization system. It is activated through the scene program menu.
