Positioning a laptop is the easiest. The HP Pavilion Gaming is an affordable gaming laptop. That is, HP tried to make the most affordable (for example, a completely plastic case and a simple design), but at the same time a productive solution (but an RTX 2060 card and a 10th generation processor). In theory, a laptop should be a hot product. I can assume that HP Pavilion Gaming was made as a counterweight to the G-series of gaming laptops from Dell. Both those laptops cannot be called elegant and designer, but the price is so seductive that it allows you to close your eyes to the cons.

At the same time, HP did a great job, as they gave HP Pavilion Gaming a twist. The laptop has a 16.1-inch screen.

  • GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB Video Card
  • Fast PCI-E 3.0 x4 SSD and secondary HDD
  • Up to 11 hours of battery life in video mode

Appearance

Recently, manufacturers have finally realized that their main customers are not pubertal pimply boys and girls (what do you want, women love games too!), whining: “Buy it! Buy it! ”, - and adult wealthy people. For this reason, the design of gaming laptops has turned 180 degrees, becoming more serious and concise. Now you can come into the office with a gaming laptop and no one will pay attention, it has such a typical and gray design.

In the case of the HP Pavilion Gaming 16, the designers made a compromise. It's plastic, plump, and has a green keyboard. Moreover, the poisonous green color is visible even when the backlight is turned off, since the ends of the keys are painted green.

However, it's undeniable that the laptop has its own style. For example, pay attention to the font on the keyboard. It should be associated with the command line and DOS.

There are no questions about assembly. Assembled with high quality and well, given the weight of the laptop, it is obvious that it can be opened with one hand. The dimensions are generally compact, and the device fits comfortably in a backpack sized for a typical 15.6-inch laptop.

HP can be praised for not reinventing the wheel, but using the most standard layout. Separate Home, End, PgUp and PgDn buttons, number pad, two Shift keys. You can only find fault with the paired arrow keys. But in a gaming laptop, this is not so important.

Performance

In terms of performance, the laptop is in order. My sample had a 6-core 10th generation i7 installed, but as I understand it, there are versions from i5 to 4 physical cores. GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB is the top graphics card for this model. There are options with GTX-cards. In my opinion, you should not take them, because then the laptop will lose its main strengths: ray tracing in games, as well as DLSS 2.0 technology, which allows you to spin Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps.

The gaming performance of the laptop is up to the mark. All New Year holidays I played Assassin's Creed Valhalla. While I was sick with the coronavirus, I used to play for 6 hours a day. Although it would be more correct to say, not so much playing as just wandering back and forth and sailing on the ship. Like walking (reading or watching movies did not work, because there you need to delve into the essence). The performance of frames per second did not sag, the game gave out a stable 40-50 fps at maximum settings.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 Review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps Review of affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

However, once again I was convinced that everything depends on the optimization and skill of the developers. I did not run RDR 2 on a laptop, but the 3DMark benchmark claims that the game will produce less than 30 fps in Full HD resolution. In contrast, there is Cyberpunk 2077, which everyone calls a new generation game that requires powerful hardware, and Sony even removed the game from the store because it was shamelessly slow on PS4. I have not encountered such problems. Settings on ultra + DLSS 2.0 for maximum performance and I have a stable 60 fps. If you set DLSS 2.0 to maximum quality, then 38 fps (although I did not notice any difference in the picture). And this is a question of ethics. On consoles, there are strict limits and standards, so developers are forced to bother with optimization. In the case of a computer, you can cheat. Like, and so it will do, just buy yourself more powerful iron. Yes, the creators of Metro: Exodus? Is that logic?

The laptop does not heat up, but actively blows air. It is, however, really quiet. There is no desire to crush him with a book just in case, so that he does not fly away. The CPU does not overheat. Below, on the Port Royal test, I compiled a temperature graph. I ran the tests sequentially, and Port Royal at the end, so, logically, by this moment the laptop should have warmed up to the maximum.

Battery life

HP claims some super performance in terms of battery life - up to 6 hours 45 minutes. Puts an asterisk and explains that this is at a screen brightness of 150 nits, which is quite dim. My measurements showed that the laptop, in general, is ready to last 5-5.5 hours in office mode. The measurement was made on the basis of a trip to the Sapsan. 4 hours of screen at a comfortable brightness (80%) is 70%. In maximum performance mode, the laptop will last less than 1.5 hours.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 Review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

The laptop comes with a 200 W adapter, which weighs just over 0.5 kg.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 Review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

Formally, I have only one nitpick about the battery. A gaming laptop means a long battery life. Accordingly, it is desirable that there be a battery conservation mode (for example, a charge limit of 50-80%). And here he is not. So it's interesting to look at the condition of the battery after a year of operation.

In general, I wrote down this question for myself, since, perhaps, there are some engineering limitations. I'm currently testing a Dell Alienware with an RTX 2080 Super Max-Q and a 4K eye-tracking OLED screen at a sky-high price. I brought these characteristics to make it clear that the product is premium and stuffed as much as possible with technologies. However, for some reason, it also does not have the battery conservation mode traditional for Dell laptops. I couldn't get any comments, so I'll ask when there will be any online presentations for journalists from the USA.

Impression and competitors

On the other hand, I worked on this laptop for almost a month while I was in St. Petersburg. HP Pavilion Gaming 16 fully covered all my office and gaming needs, and when needed, it adequately lasted all the way to Sapsan. By the way, the price of a test copy is 104,990 rubles. In my opinion, the main competitor is the Dell G5. Both laptops are pieces of plastic, sharpened for maximum value for their money. Dell G5 costs a little more (although it all depends on configurations). Perhaps its obvious advantage is the 144 Hz screen. Another point is that, judging by the site, the standard version of the RTX 2060 (not Max-Q) is installed in the G5. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to test this product, but in theory it gives about +10% performance. Whether it is worth overpaying an additional 7-10 thousand for extra 5-10 fps is an open question.

In theory, a laptop should be a hot product. I can assume that HP Pavilion Gaming was made as a counterbalance to the G-series of gaming laptops from Dell. Both those laptops cannot be called elegant and designer, but the price is so seductive that it allows you to close your eyes to the cons.

At the same time, HP did a great job, as they gave HP Pavilion Gaming a twist. The laptop has a 16.1-inch screen.

So, the main selling elements that should hook are:

  • 16.1" anti-glare screen in 15.6" body
  • GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB Video Card

Dimensions are generally compact, and the device fits comfortably in a backpack sized for a typical 15.6-inch laptop.

The laptop has a spacious body, typical screws, so nothing prevents the user from changing SSD, HDD and RAM, if such a desire arises. However, if there is a desire to change the same SSD, then it should be noted that initially HP installed a high-speed drive. Accordingly, you need to change to something similar, and not save.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 Review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps Review of affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

In synthetic tests, the laptop performed well. We can say that HP engineers have realized the full potential of the RTX 2060 Max-Q card, providing it with enough space and good cooling.

HP has a balanced product. It doesn't break performance records, doesn't try to impress with design or premium flair. It's a workhorse at a nice price.

Given the design with acid green elements, I want to say that the laptop is ideal for schoolchildren and students whom parents want to encourage for their good studies.
