Asus Zen AiO Pro review

The first generation of Zen AiO was presented almost a year ago at Computex 2015, then it was a good candy bar in all respects, with the only exception that it had a low resolution (FHD) by today's standards. In autumn, they showed its updated version of Zen AiO S, where this annoying flaw was fixed, and it was this new version of the monoblock that we received for testing.

Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

No matter what anyone says, the first thing that comes to mind when looking at the Zen AiO S is the design similarity with the iMac. A similar leg, sloping edges, transfer of all ports to the back side - in general, monoblocks are very similar, and it is clear that Zen AiO is Asus' answer to Apple's iMac. However, despite the resemblance, Zen AiO has its own signature features.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

For example, take a look at this pattern that is common to the entire Zen line.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

The main body material is aluminum, the back cover and the leg of the monoblock are made of it, golden was chosen as the color.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

At the bottom end, two stereo speakers with proprietary Sonic Master technology were installed. They have good sound quality, but even with the “naked ear” you can hear the difference between them and the speakers on the iMac, the advantage for the latter. By the way, hot air comes out from here when the coolers are running.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

The following ports and connectors are located on the back side:

Asus Zen AiO Pro

Right: Two HDMI ports, four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and one USB Type C port

Asus Zen AiO Pro

Left: SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone and microphone jacks

And the power button is also located on the right, on the iMac it is, on the contrary, on the left, so out of habit you try to find it on the wrong side

Asus Zen AiO Pro

And in the center there is a connector for the power supply and RJ-45

If you compare the number of connectors with iMac, then the advantage is clearly with Zen AiO Pro. Here you have two full-fledged HDMI instead of the useless Thunderbolt, and as many as six USB ports, and two separate jacks for headphones and headsets, and even support for USB Type C!

We tested the older model with UHD resolution, and the picture on such a display looks just fine. Firstly, with such a high PPI monitor, the type of font smoothing no longer matters, they look as smooth as possible, it feels like each letter is drawn with a thin marker. By the way, an increasing number of applications for Windows are being optimized for such ultra-high resolutions, even Skype has pulled itself up, and let’s not even talk about Telegram. And viewing photos on such a screen is a pleasure.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

There will be touch screen and regular screen versions available, our test unit supported finger taps. I won’t say that I often used this functionality, but periodically swiped along the left edge of the monitor to see new notifications or turn off any of the wireless modules.

The screen has an oleophobic coating, considering the display area, it is quite good, in any case, the finger glides smoothly on the glass, and the prints are easily wiped off with a cloth.

The angle of inclination is relatively small, you can see for yourself in the photo below.

Now for the sad part. The screen is very glare, unlike the iMac, there is no good anti-glare coating, so in sunny weather you will see your reflection even at maximum brightness.

Operating system

The monoblock runs Windows 10 with all its pluses and minuses. Since I regularly compare Zen AiO Pro with iMac, let me leave a little comment about it here. I switched to OS X three years ago, the first four months were insanely uncomfortable and unusual (it's like changing the dominant hand). But when you get used to a slightly different logic of work and interface features, you begin to fully enjoy other advantages of the system. These are, of course, more beautiful applications, most of which are Retina-Ready, excellent scaling and high speed.

Asus Zen AiO Pro Asus Zen AiO Pro

I thought the Zen AiO test was a great opportunity to try switching to Windows again, but it's like changing the dominant hand again, with special advantages for me Curtain Rods will not appear.

I'm not writing this to annoy you, dear users, this is more of a comment for iMac owners who are planning to change their computer. If you have been using Windows for a long time and love the top ten, feel free to ignore this paragraph.

Once I was talking with a colleague from another publication, and he noted a very important thing: the difference in performance from year to year is getting smaller, the same chipsets from Intel may be getting better, but the gap is no longer as big as in the canonical example with 386 and 486. Of course, all everyday tasks from the browser to Photoshop do not cause any problems for Zen AiO Pro, this is not surprising with such a filling.

I would like to talk separately about the level of noise and heating. My iMac is almost completely silent, I can work on it even in complete silence, and nothing will irritate my hearing. But in Zen AiO Pro, the work of coolers, let's say, is very well audible, regardless of whether the music is on or not, some productive tasks are running on the computer, or I'm just writing text in Word. Of course, this behavior keeps the Zen AiO case as cool as possible, but I was pretty annoyed by the background work of coolers.

Keyboard and mouse

I'll start with the keyboard. The first thing I immediately liked was that it uses a full-size layout along with a separate Numeric Pad, yay! No, seriously, you can’t even imagine how sometimes I miss the wireless Apple Keyboard, and their wired keyboard periodically ceased to be detected by the iMac. The second is the soft key travel, after all, you pretty much wean yourself from this when moving to a Mac, where most keyboards have a very short travel.

Asus Zen AiO Pro Asus Zen AiO Pro

The mouse is completely ordinary, made in the same style as a monoblock.

Asus Zen AiO Pro Asus Zen AiO Pro

And now for the sad part, both the keyboard and mouse are made of cheap plastic and don't match the materials of the beautiful aluminum Zen AiO Pro at all. It is not clear what prevented Asus from making them from the same material.

Camera and microphone

The monoblock has a regular 1 MP camera and a 2 MP Intel RealSense camera. With it, you can unlock the computer by your image, I previously read that while the function does not work very well, but the camera recognized me perfectly, the main thing is to tilt the screen a little so that your face fits completely into the frame.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

The usual "front-end" is not particularly impressive, it is suitable for communicating in Skype, but nothing more. There are no complaints about the built-in microphone: your interlocutor hears you perfectly, he checked it in the same Skype.

Wireless interfaces

Interfaces Availability
Wi-Fi Yes, b/g /n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct supported
Bluetooth Yes, version 4.0, all popular profiles are supported, including . A2DP

Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work fine, for two weeks of using the monoblock there were no special complaints about them.

Conclusion

The initial version of Zen AiO Pro costs from 87,000 rubles, while it is important to remember that it will have an HDD and only FHD resolution, so I recommend that you immediately look at the SDD and Ultra HD version, at the moment with such only the older configuration is sold with a screen (as in our review), it will cost you 122,100 rubles. It is important to understand that a similar iMac 4k configuration will cost around 150,000 or even more.

Asus Zen AiO Pro

If you compare the monoblock with iMac, then the latter has better sound quality in the speakers, quiet operation of coolers and a better display that does not glare in bright light. But in Zen AiO Pro, the video card is much more productive, there are more useful ports, and it costs less than the same iMac 4k with an SSD. And it works on Windows, which will also be another plus for many users.

As a result, we get a good competitor to the iMac on Windows with a lower cost and good looks. An excellent solution for those who are looking for a stylish monoblock and are not ready to consider buying Apple equipment (and such people can be understood, given its cost).

The mouse is completely ordinary, made in the same style as a monoblock.

As a result, we get a good competitor to the iMac on Windows with a lower cost and good appearance. An excellent solution for those who are looking for a stylish monoblock and are not ready to consider buying Apple equipment (and such people can be understood, given its cost).

Packages

  • Monoblock
  • Power supply
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Keyboard and mouse adapter
  • Documentation

I regret to note that despite the external resemblance to the iMac, the power supply of the AiO S is not very compact, otherwise the package is standard, we will talk about the keyboard and mouse in a separate section.

For example, take a look at this pattern that is common to the entire Zen line.

The main body material is aluminum, the back cover and the leg of the monoblock are made of it, golden was chosen as the color.

At the bottom end, two stereo speakers with proprietary Sonic Master technology were installed. They have good sound quality, but even with the “naked ear” you can hear the difference between them and the speakers on the iMac, the advantage for the latter. By the way, hot air comes out from here when the coolers are running.

The following ports and connectors are located on the back side:

Right: Two HDMI ports, four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and one USB Type C port

Left: SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone and microphone jacks

And the power button is also located on the right, on the iMac it is, on the contrary, on the left, so out of habit you try to find it on the wrong side

Dimensions

Height (mm) Width (mm) Thickness (mm) Weight (grams) Asus Zen AiO Pro 434 585 52-190 7300 Apple iMac 21.5 4k 450 528 170 5680

The dimensions of both monoblocks are +/- the same, but it is important to consider that the Zen AiO Pro has a slightly larger screen size, so it is wider and heavier.

Screen

Characteristics Value Screen diagonal 23.8 inches Display resolution 3840x2160 pixels or 1920x1080 pixels PPI value 185 / 92 Matrix type IPS Protective coating Glass Oleophobic coating Yes Automatic brightness control Yes Multi-touch support Present, up to ten simultaneous touches

I thought the Zen AiO test was a great opportunity to try switching to Windows again, but it's like changing your dominant hand again, and I won't get much benefit from Curtain Rods.

I thought the Zen AiO test was a great opportunity to try switching to Windows again, but it's like changing your dominant hand again, with special advantages for me Curtain Rods Curtain Rods will not appear.

I'm not writing this to annoy you, dear users, this is more of a comment for iMac owners who are planning to change their computer. If you have been using Windows for a long time and love the top ten, feel free to ignore this paragraph.

Performance

Once I was talking with a colleague from another publication, and he noted a very important thing: the difference in performance from year to year is getting smaller, the same chipsets from Intel may be getting better, but the gap is no longer as big as in the canonical example with 386 and 486. Of course, all everyday tasks from the browser to Photoshop do not cause any problems for Zen AiO Pro, this is not surprising with such a filling.

Continuing the comparison with the iMac, I can't help but note the use of NVIDIA mobile graphics against the integrated Intel HD. I heard a lot of good reviews about the 9xxm series, so I decided to check how true they were. As a result, on some games, like the latest The Witcher, you can play at high settings, but only at 1080p. After all, this is not a gaming computer.
