Philips S308 (CTS308) review

Philips (I'll write for the letter-eaters - China Electronic Corporation, because they now own the mobile division) has released two inexpensive smartphones on the Android operating system to the Russian market. The first one is called S388, we will get acquainted with it in the near future, the second one is S308. That is what we will be reviewing.

Philips S308 is a typical budget phone with a simple screen, a low-powered processor, a camera without autofocus and a rather "dead" battery. Nevertheless, in the price category up to 5,000 rubles, there are not so many “androids” from popular brands, so it’s still worth considering the S308 closer.

Design, dimensions, controls

As a rule, the cheaper the device, the more primitive its design (sometimes vice versa, hello Samsung). However, it is Philips (let's call them that, because CEC is still unusual by ear) who are trying to show something original even in the segment of budget phones. At least they are not faceless oval-shaped pieces of plastic.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

In general, the appearance of the S308 is quite typical for most androids, but there are design highlights: the upper edge of the device has a flat shape, the corners on the right and left are slightly sloping, and the bottom end is rounded. As a result, again, in my opinion, on the one hand, the smartphone looks (almost in the truest sense of the word) strictly, and on the other, more calmly. The gadget lies well in the hand due to its compact dimensions (126x64.5x9.7 mm), light weight (125 grams) and smoothed right and left ends.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

The upper plastic insert is glossy, the same type of "bottom" of the lower face. The edging that goes into the front panel on the sides and bottom is made of soft-touch plastic, which is pleasant to the touch. The phone does not slip out of your hands at all, even if they are wet. Three colors are available for sale: black, white and red.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

With the assembly of Philips S308, everything is fine, the device feels solid, nothing creaks or backlash anywhere. When compressed, it does not crunch or groan. In general, he is doing well.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

As for the soiled case, everything here is typical for any gadget with a soft-touch coating: of course, fingerprints are visible, but not as noticeable as on the glossy cover. The screen also gets dirty, there is a white coating, but the finger glides over the surface without any problems. There were no scratches on the display even after a couple of weeks of active use. Apparently, there is durable glass.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

By the way, the plastic of the rear panel is also dyed inside, i.e. if you accidentally scratch it, then nothing terrible will happen: under the soft-touch coating is the same black color.

On the front panel, in the top center, there is a speaker, covered with a metal mesh. Its volume is slightly below average, intelligibility is the same. In a noisy place, the interlocutor will not be heard. The timbre is mostly mid-range, so you hear a hum. When switching the sound to handsfree mode, the volume level is not enough to comfortably hear a conversation in a car or on the street. It was worth waiting for this from a budget phone.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

To the left of the speaker are light and proximity sensors, above them is an indicator of missed events. On the right is the front camera. Below are the typical buttons for Android devices. There is no backlight, so at night it may be difficult to click on the desired touch zone.

There is a microphone on the bottom end, microUSB and a standard 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones or a headset on the top.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

On the top left side is a volume rocker. It is small, convex, easy to press, easy to grope. The power button, also known as the lock button and activate the backlight, is on the right side. It is small, but convex.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

The camera eye recessed into the body, the flash and the speakerphone are on the back of the device.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

To remove the back cover, you need to pry it from the recess on the bottom end. On the left under it are two slots for large SIM-cards (miniSIM). Contacts are open, so, theoretically, you can even install microSIM cards there. To the right Chrysler is a microSD card slot.

Display

This smartphone uses a screen that is only 4 inches diagonal. The physical size is 52x87 mm, the resolution is typically low - 480x800 pixels (density - 233 pixels per inch). The Philips S308 display matrix is not made using IPS technology, so viewing angles are extremely small, color reproduction is mediocre.

When you tilt the device towards you, the colors on the display are inverted; when you tilt the device away from you, the contrast deteriorates sharply. The brightness of the backlight of the screen matrix is slightly above average: during the day the image is visible, but everything fades in the sun. There is an air gap between the protective glass and the matrix.

The capacitive touch layer works out up to 2 simultaneous touches ("multi-touch"). Sensitivity is good, no problems found. The brightness of the matrix backlight is adjusted either automatically or manually in a fairly wide range.

The battery is charged from a standard AC adapter for about 2.5 hours.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

Communications

In this section, everything is typical for any budget Android smartphone. The device operates in cellular networks 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 850/900/1800 MHz) and 3G (900/2100 MHz). Both slots can use third generation communication, but according to the 2G (SIM1) + 3G (SIM2) or 3G + 2G scheme.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

Bluetooth version 3.0 available for file and voice transfer. There is wireless Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The device, of course, can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) or modem.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

There is a GPS. Its sensitivity is quite good: in “cold” mode it finds up to 3 satellites indoors in 20 seconds, up to 5 satellites near a window in 10 seconds, and up to 8 in open space during the same time.

Memory and memory card

Like most similar devices, the S308 is equipped with 512 MB of RAM. On average, just over 200 MB are free. Flash memory is 4 GB, but, as always, much less is available: 1 "gig" went for installing applications, and 1.2 GB for data storage.

There is a slot for a microSD memory card. Its maximum capacity can be 32 GB.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with two camera modules: the main one with 5 MP without autofocus, the front one also without focusing, with 0.3 MP. There is a flash, but its effectiveness is reduced to zero when it comes to photos at a distance of more than 30 centimeters.

Picture quality corresponds to cameras used in cheap mobile phones: poor detail, dynamic range, behavior in direct sunlight. The only thing that pleases is the white balance.

The video device writes at a resolution of 864x480 pixels at 30 frames per second. The picture is not bad, but it is felt that the lens has no focus - the sharpness leaves much to be desired. The sound is clear but mono.

The front camera takes frames at a resolution of 480x640 pixels, and records video at the same resolution.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

Video file characteristic:

  • File format: 3GP
  • Video codec: MPEG-4, 8 Mbps
  • Resolution: 864 x 480, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC 128Kbps
  • Channels: 1ch, 48kHz

Performance and software platform

Of course, there is a chipset from the Taiwanese manufacturer MediaTek. The chip is called MT6572 - these are two ARM Cortex-A7 cores (28 nm manufacturing process) at 1 GHz. Graphics core - Mali-400 (500 MHz).

The phone behaves relatively briskly without load, but as soon as you try to load it with something, even trivially download an application from the Play Market, the smartphone starts to slow down a lot: the animation freezes, tasks practically do not switch, and so on.

Almost all toys go, but, of course, you should not count on heavy "dins" with full graphics.

Brief information and benchmarks (Quadrant Standard, Antutu Benchmark):

The Philips S308 smartphone runs on the Google Android operating system version 4.2.2. The developers decided to slightly change the design of the bare system, so almost all the icons were redrawn. Personally, I liked this design, it is somewhat reminiscent of iOS8 and the future Android L. There are no other changes, everything is typical for any Android device.

Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308) Philips S308 (CTS308)

Multimedia

The device has a standard music and video player, radio.

The volume of the speaker is slightly above average, the quality is good: even pure high frequencies are heard, low frequencies are transmitted worse. When you close the speaker hole, the volume decreases to almost zero.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

The volume in the headphones is high, I did not hear any distortion, the player sounds great. Perhaps it lacks deep lows and more expressive highs.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

The video player can "play" FullHD videos, but artifacts often come out. Therefore, it is best to limit the video to 720p.

Philips S308 (CTS308)

Conclusion

At the time of writing the review, the Philips S308 smartphone costs about 4,000 rubles, you can easily find cheaper ones. For the money, the device turned out to be quite good. Of course, slightly more interesting offers from other B and C brands are “pressed” from all sides, but in this case, at least there is the Philips name familiar to many. If you absolutely do not care what brand to buy, then you should take a closer look at the following gadgets: Explay Vega, Fly IQ4416 ERA Life 5, Alcatel One Touch X'POP, Huawei ASCEND Y300, Micromax A69 Bolt, Zopo ZP580.

Performance and software platform

Of course, here is a chipset from the Taiwanese manufacturer MediaTek.

The volume in the headphones is high, I did not hear any distortion, the player sounds great. Perhaps it lacks deep lows and more expressive highs.

The video player can "play" FullHD videos, but artifacts often come out. Therefore, it is best to limit the video to 720p.

On the top left side is a volume rocker. It is small, convex, easy to press, easy to grope. The power button, also known as the lock button and activate the backlight, is on the right side. It is small, but convex.

The camera eye recessed into the body, the flash and the speakerphone are on the back of the device.

To remove the back cover, you need to pry it from the recess on the bottom end. On the left under it are two slots for large SIM-cards (miniSIM). Contacts are open, so, theoretically, you can even install microSIM cards there. To the right of Chrysler is a slot for a microSD memory card.

Display

This smartphone uses a screen size of only 4 inches.

Battery

The development team of this device, apparently, forgot that they have a good "eating" Android smartphone in their hands, so they installed a battery with a ridiculous capacity of 1400 mAh here. I propose to take the iPhone 5S from the "developers" and give them Philips S308 for personal use, maybe then they will understand their mistake. The only thing that saves the day is a weak processor and a simple screen.

Average S308 run time is about 7 hours. Here I include the operation of the device in 3G, infrequent calls, a couple of dozen photos on the camera and some other activity. If you use the device as a video player, then expect about 3 hours at medium brightness and listening to sound with headphones.

The battery is charged from a standard AC adapter for about 2.5 hours.

Bluetooth version 3.0 available for file and voice transfer. There is wireless Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The device, of course, can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) or modem.

Video file specification:

  • File format: 3GP
  • Video codec: MPEG-4, 8 Mbps
  • Resolution: 864 x 480, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC 128Kbps
  • Channels: 1ch, 48 kHz

Multimedia

The device has a standard music and video player, radio.

The volume of the speaker is slightly above average, the quality is good: even pure high frequencies are heard, low frequencies are transmitted worse. When you close the speaker hole, the volume decreases to almost zero.

The volume in the headphones is high, I did not hear any distortion, the player sounds great. Perhaps it lacks deep lows and more expressive highs.

The video player can "play" FullHD videos, but artifacts often come out. Therefore, it is best to limit the video to 720p.
