ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite (ZC600KL) review

ASUS unveiled three smartphone models at MWC 2018 - ZenFone 5, ZenFone 5Z and ZenFone 5 Lite. The first two belong to the high price segment, and the last one to the middle one. At the moment, the 5 Lite model costs 22,000 rubles, and, in fact, it will be discussed in this article.

Smartphone ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite was released in every sense for young people who are fond of "photos" (the word "photography", it seems to me, would be somewhat inappropriate here, it speaks more of a professional approach). Judge for yourself: two cameras on the front side for shooting not only ordinary shots, but also with a wide angle of 120 degrees. In addition, to create photos in dark lighting conditions, an LED flash was placed on the front panel. On the reverse side are two more cameras - with the usual viewing angle and 120 degrees. As you should have already understood, the main direction of the Lite line, and not only, is taking photos. Actually, this is evidenced by the logos on the packages in the form of a crosshair of two phones forming a heart, and the signature below: "WE LOVE PHOTO".

So it turns out that the ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite model should attract the attention of young people not only with a relatively low price and bright appearance, but also with photo opportunities.

Design, dimensions, controls

Asus finally got rid of the previous design, and now their new products look more modern. Yes, that style was recognizable, but the metal lid with two plastic inserts is a complete anachronism :)

I can't say that ZenFone 5 Lite looks unusual and original, but the metal matte side frame and glass panel on the back give the smartphone, so to speak, "airiness" and "freshness". From sloping "remnants" the developers moved on to flat elegant forms. I like it, and I support this development.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

The smartphone model is sold in three colors: black (in real life it is dark blue), white and red. Of course, the bright red ZenFone 5 Lite looks more spectacular, but it is precisely this one that is not for sale on the official website, and at the time of this writing, this color was not even available on the Yandex Market. Apparently, this is a tricky policy of almost all manufacturers: let's start selling a model in black and white, and when the market is saturated with them, we will roll out gray-brown-crimson ones to stir up interest.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

The side frames are made of metal, they are matte and slightly sloping. Panels in front and behind slightly rise above the body, and at the edges form glossy bumpers. The glasses used are not specified, but they have an oleophobic coating, they are quite durable, and during testing I did not find deep scratches on the surface.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Due to the mini-sides, the gadget feels angular in the hand, but this is what allows the smartphone not to slip out of the palm of your hand. It must be understood that, despite the relatively compact dimensions (for a 6-inch device) - 160x76x7.8 mm, ZenFone 5 Lite is still big. The weight of the device is within the normal range - 168 grams: less - too light, more - heavy, like the Apple iPhone 8 Plus.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

On the top of the front panel is camera number one (wide angle), light and proximity sensors, flash, voice speaker, camera number two (small angle), and on the side there is a bright indicator of missed events. The speaker is loud, the sound is very pleasant: velvet, bass, clear.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

At the bottom end are the following elements: microphone, microUSB and speakerphone. The power button and the volume rocker (thin, the move is clear, but minimal) are on the right, and on the left is a slot with a metal slide for two SIM cards and a memory card at the same time. It seems to me that such a decision is a definite plus in the karma of the gadget. And then they tell us that there is no room in the body for similar designs ...

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Top - 3.5 mm audio output and an additional microphone for noise reduction.

On the reverse side, in the upper central part, there is a small ledge with two lenses. To the left of it is a single-section LED flash, and below it is a round fingerprint scanner, slightly recessed into the body.

Total in appearance: a pleasant, elegant, but quite typical design.

Display

The new product from ASUS uses a large screen size - 6 inches. Thus, we decided to please phablet lovers. By the way, in the older version of the device, the diagonal is already 6.2 inches.

The bezels of the ZenFone 5 Lite screen are not the smallest: top and bottom - 12 mm, and right and left - 4 mm each. The anti-reflective properties of the glass are good.

The resolution of the IPS-matrix of the display is FullHD + (2160x1080 pixels), the density is about 400 pixels per inch, the usable area is about 80%. The capacitive touch layer supports up to 10 simultaneous touches.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

The brightness of white is 400 cd/m2, the brightness of black is 0.24 cd/m2, and the contrast ratio is 1700:1. The calibrator showed just such values. Purely visually, the brightness and contrast do not seem so high.

The brightness graph is slightly increased (the picture will look brighter than necessary); gamma normal; a graph of colors with a clear excess of blue; the temperature varies depending on the brightness (cold shades will prevail at low brightness, warm shades at high brightness); the received data corresponds to the sRGB triangle, which means that the color reproduction is even; the gray points are located far from delta e=10, that is, the gray color is unnatural.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Total: lovers of saturated colors will be disappointed, depending on the brightness, the shade will also change; the brightness and contrast parameters are excellent, however, the image is poorly readable in bright sunlight.

Opening hours

The ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite uses a 3300mAh non-removable battery. Why it was impossible to put a battery of at least 4000 mAh in such a large case, I, unfortunately, do not know.

According to official data, the smartphone "lives" 24 days in standby mode, 30 hours of talk time and 4 days of music playback.

In my operating conditions, the phone worked for about 12-14 hours at automatic brightness and about 4 hours of screen glow. The video plays up to 9 hours, and with toys you can squeeze out of the device for about 4 hours.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

In my opinion, a modern smartphone more expensive than 15,000 rubles simply must have USB Type-C and fast charging. Neither one nor the other in ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite is not. In the kit you will find a simple AC adapter 5 V - 2 A, so you will have to wait 2.5 hours for a full charge.

Of course, the device has several power saving modes:

  • Productivity
  • Regular
  • Energy saving
  • Super savings
  • Custom

To be honest, I have not yet seen a single person I know who would use such modes on any device. Almost everyone I know just connects portable batteries to smartphones when the battery is low. This is much more effective than limiting yourself to various phone functions.

Communications

Traditionally, in an Android smartphone, you can use two SIM cards with one radio module. The ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite device "understands" 2G / 3G and LTE Cat 13 (reception - 400 Mbps, return - 75 Mbps). The frequencies are in order: 2G (bands 2, 3, 5 and 8), 3G (bands 1, 5 and 8), 4G LTE (bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 20).

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

There is a full-fledged NFC chip that works with Mifare Classic and Ultralight. This means that you can easily not only pay for purchases, but also top up your Troika card.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac is dual-band, Bluetooth is version 4.1. The smartphone “sees” GPS / GLONASS / BDS satellites: the accuracy is average (during use, I observed a maximum of 5 meters), but the sensitivity is high (it easily detects up to 40 satellites and includes about 20).

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Total: I can’t single out any features, but you can put a plus for a full-fledged NFC.

Memory

ZC600KL (SDM630) has 4GB LPDDR4 RAM (3660MB/s average) and 64GB ROM (245MB/s read, 216MB/s write, good performance) ) eMCP (embedded Multi-Chip Package) - combines eMMC memory and low power DRAM memory in one more compact package. A definite positive point is the presence of a separate slot for a microSD memory card. The maximum capacity of the card is up to 2 TB.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Cameras

Oh, don't get confused, where is it and what is it for ... :) So, ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite has four cameras: two on one side, two on the other side. The purpose is the same: one camera makes a wide angle, the other - a normal one.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

20 megapixel main front module (Sony IMX376), no autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, 85-degree field of view; additional module for 8 megapixels, aperture f/2.4, coverage angle 120 degrees.

16MP main camera, phase detection autofocus, f/2.2 aperture, no OIS (digital stub only), LED flash; additional module 8 MP, aperture f/2.4, 120 degrees viewing angle.

The quality of the cameras would rate 6 out of 10. I did not like the dynamic range: during the day it works well either the sky, or anything below it. Almost always high contrast, somewhat dirty structure of photos. Wide-angle footage is even worse.

It seems to me that not only small matrices are to blame here, but also weak lenses: most likely, simple uncoated lenses. And, of course, software. I think that over time, all these shortcomings will be corrected (with the help of software, you can “pull” the picture).

Front cameras shoot well, but they distort the face a lot, and both lenses. In night photos, I look like an “alkonaut”, and the girl does not look better: the lower part of the frame is enlarged, and the upper one is reduced. However, I am well aware that such distortions can be associated with a wide-angle lens. But here they are uneven, in my humble opinion.

The smartphone can record FullHD 60fps and 4K 30fps videos. The quality seemed to me average, at the level of photos, that is, a low dynamic range. Wide-angle video suffers from artifacts and low DD. ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite night videos fail at all.

The front camera records Full HD videos at 30 frames per second. The quality is good, the sound is clear, stereo.

Total: the smartphone creates photos and videos of medium quality, probably the developers will be able to fix this with firmware.

The camera interface is not overloaded with elements, but it has a lot of icons. The main element is switching between two cameras. There is a professional shooting mode: ISO 100 - 3200, shutter speed 1/1000 - 32 seconds plus focus adjustment.

Performance and Software

The ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite smartphone has a relatively fresh Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, released in the third quarter of last year. It is: 14 nm process technology with FinFET transistors, 64 bits, 8 Cortex-A53 cores (frequency up to 2.2 GHz), Adreno 508 graphics accelerator.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

The chipset is not very productive, so Antutu scores 87,000 points in the familiar test. In terms of the old version of the application, this is about 60,000 points. Judging by the benchmark, the weak point is the GPU: the device managed to defeat only 21% of the gadgets tested by the program.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

From the point of view of how the smartphone works with the interface, there are no problems. With games, everything is fine: most go to the maximum settings. Under load of the processor, the case heats up a little, the maximum measured temperature was 43 degrees.

The gadget operates on the Google Android operating system version 7.1.1 and the proprietary ZenUI 5 shell. Since we reviewed no device on ZenUI 5, I won’t talk about the shell in detail. Of the pleasant things - face recognition. Works very fast, but only with good lighting levels.

Among the features of the software, it is worth highlighting Twin App, Page Maker and Game Genie. ZenMotion has touch, move, and one-handed gestures. In addition, there are special modes: simplified and children. But, again, I repeat that all these things are in any ASUS smartphone.

Multimedia

There is only one multimedia speaker in ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite. Its volume is average, the quality is ordinary, unremarkable, the sound is flat to the limit.

Headphone sound tested on Meizu Flow and Bose QC35. In the first "ears" I liked the presentation and expressiveness of medium and high frequencies, the low ones were muffled. Secondly, the sound was simple - the exact opposite of Meizu. In general, I can rate the sound in the headphones as average. There is a radio in this model.

Impression

I don't know if you noticed or not, but the word "average" was mentioned too often in this or that section of the review. So it was conceived or it happened by chance, but ASUS ZenFone 5 lite turned out to be average in almost all respects:

  • The appearance is nice, but I can't say that it's original
  • The screen is good, but some parameters are weak
  • Battery with typical battery life
  • Although there are many cameras, they are all average
  • Qualcomm processor, but not a "top"
  • Music performance is average

Among the competitors, all the “suits” of Huawei are Honor 7X, Honor 9 Lite, Nova 2i and so on. There is BQ 6000L Aurora and the best Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.

ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite

Let me remind you that ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite now costs 22,000 rubles. If you dig into the Yandex Market, you can find from 18,000 rubles (certified). For this money, the smartphone, of course, is very good, so I can safely recommend it for purchase!

Due to the mini-sides, the gadget in the hand feels angular, but this is what allows the smartphone not to slip out of the palm of your hand. It must be understood that, despite the relatively compact dimensions (for a 6-inch device) - 160x76x7.8 mm, ZenFone 5 Lite is still large. The weight of the device is within the normal range - 168 grams: less - too light, more - heavy, like the Apple iPhone 8 Plus.

Cameras

Oh, don't get confused, where is which one and why is it needed ...

Yes, that style was recognizable, but a metal lid with two plastic inserts is a complete anachronism :)

I can't say that ZenFone 5 Lite looks unusual and original, but the metal matte side frame and glass panel on the back give the smartphone, so to speak, "airiness" and "freshness". From sloping "remnants" the developers moved on to flat elegant forms. I like it, and I support this development.
