The image on the display is segmented, but at first glance this is not even noticeable, it seems that the iBall display is graphic. During operation, the display shows the signal source type, battery level, power type, signal reception status and analog clock dial. Around the display is a ring volume indicator, consisting of many segments.

The image quality on the display does not cause any complaints, in most cases all the icons are clearly visible, and the bright backlight during operation looks good against the white case. Worst of all, unfortunately, you can see the hour marks on the “dial”, they are made in the form of dots, although it would be more logical to make them serifs. Thus, to find out the time, you have to get quite close to the system. In general, the presence of an "analog" clock in iBall is dictated, of course, by design considerations - large digital symbols would be much better visible.

Transmitter (cradle)

The transmitter for the iBall is round and quite heavy. However, the latter property helps him not to slide on the surface of the table. On the top surface of the transmitter there is a special recess in which the iPod is installed. When installed, the transmitter plug, installed in the recess, gets into the player's connector. This is one of the main advantages of the player: the music is "extracted" from the player directly, which has a positive effect on the sound quality. In addition, in this way, the player's battery is charged simultaneously with signal transmission. In addition, using the cradle, you can transfer music from your iPod to an external signal receiver using the line output, output video signal and graphics to an external display via the S-Video output, and also transfer the signal from an external source to the iBall. The picture is completed by a connector for a branded USB cable, which allows you to "upload" music to your iPod without removing it from the transmitter cradle.

The quality of the transmitter is at a high level and matches that of the iBall. The proposed features and the implementation of all the declared functions are performed at an excellent level, at the time of the first acquaintance you do not expect such functional richness from the cradle. You can connect it to, say, a PC and watch movies or play games with sound from iBall.

All connectors are located on a special panel on the side. The location of the connectors is thought out, they are spaced apart so that the plugs do not interfere with each other.

The level of implementation of the cradle as a whole can be assessed as excellent, it deserves praise.

Food

The transmitter and audio system are powered by the included power adapters. In addition, the system has a battery compartment for five NiMH batteries with a capacity of 3000 mAh and thus confirms its wireless status. Batteries are charged directly in the system case, which is convenient. Batteries have a relatively infrequent form factor (C), which can make it a little more difficult to replace them if it happens to fail.

The battery life is claimed to be 8 hours, in real life the system worked for about 7 hours at a fairly high volume level. When using alkaline batteries, the manufacturer claims up to 16 hours of operation, and there is no reason not to believe this figure. Thus, iBall can be great for a picnic, provided that the car has a network converter to connect the transmitter adapter.

Sound and Usability

In the case of a wireless audio system, two main parameters come to the fore: the distance from the transmitter at which the system works stably, and the quality of the sound transmitted wirelessly. In both respects, the system satisfies expectations.

The maximum distance at which the system can stably receive a signal from the transmitter and play it is more than 15 meters. In this case, the signal easily passes through brick walls. The figure declared by the manufacturer is 30 meters, apparently, it is given for line-of-sight conditions between the transmitter and the audio system. Thus, the transmitter can be installed in one room, and the system in the next one, there will be no problems with signal transmission. That is, iBall can be safely operated in an ordinary city apartment.

The sound quality of the system can be assessed as decent, largely due to a separate speaker for low frequencies. Of course, with the help of one iBall it will not be possible to arrange a party, however, to fill a medium-sized room with music, the volume of the system is quite enough. There is no degradation in sound associated with wireless transmission under normal conditions, and the entire frequency range is reproduced accurately without any blockages or bursts. High and mid frequencies sound clear, not blurry, there is a good bass response.

The following properties of the system can be noted as minor drawbacks. If there is a person on the direct line between the transmitter and the system, there will occasionally be slight interference in the signal, almost inaudible, but still present. It was not possible to note any pattern in their appearance, while the system does not respond to incoming and made calls on a cell phone and the operation of other electrical appliances.

In addition, iBall has low resistance to overload, when the volume level is set to high values, the system cannot cope, the sound starts to "wheeze", "choke". It would be easier to set up the built-in amplifier so that this does not happen. However, the volume level set on the player does not affect the volume of the system, but the equalizer settings in the iPod affect the sound directly. It is worth repeating: at medium and above average volume levels (up to about 90 percent), the system sounds good and does not cause any complaints. If you slightly lower the level of low frequencies, you can achieve clear sound from iBall without overloads, even at maximum volume. In addition, the system has its own two-band equalizer, with which you can adjust the sound from an external source according to your own preferences.

The iBall's speakers deliver 1.5W RMS for each mid-tweeter and 3W for the woofer.

Conclusions and impressions

iBall is still an unusual and rare type of device, although with the development of Bluetooth, the number of such devices is likely to increase. It is worth noting that the signal is transmitted from the cradle to the system at a frequency of approximately 2.4 GHz, but the transmission technology has nothing to do with Bluetooth.

The system boasts an exemplary and very attractive design, eye-catching, high quality workmanship and body assembly, and good sound. The disadvantages, however, almost imperceptible, are the sometimes occurring interference and overload of the low-frequency speaker at maximum volume.

The overall impression left by the iBall is very favorable, it is a curious example of modern technology, moreover, it reliably performs the tasks assigned to it.

The main obstacle to the total “iballization” of desktops and living rooms of Russian residents remains the price of the system, which today in Moscow is at about $260. By the way, in the US it is only $10 lower. Be that as it may, iBall can be a great gift for an iPod lover and a connoisseur of modern technology.
