Operators: news and updates

This time we are talking mainly about the development of the previously described events. Continuation of adventures with MegaFon's "Internet tablet", reaction to the new "ALL" Beeline, important updates of mobile "Personal Accounts". Of the new and unusual - the "Fixikfon" option in MTS, an interesting attempt to create a comprehensive solution for a children's smartphone or tablet.

In cases where important additional information or clarifications appear, I usually write Update, but this is when "in hot pursuit". I consider it unsportsmanlike to add or change the text of the review after a few days or weeks, and there is not much point in this. As experience shows, the review is actively read for a week, a maximum of two weeks in the case of an important topic that affects many. Then the text disappears into oblivion or passes into the category of reference information, which is sought purposefully. If there is a need to return to the topic, then it is wiser to make a separate note. So, from time to time, “hodgepodges” of additions and work on bugs appear from time to time.

MegaFon, "Internet tablet"

The Internet Tablet option with 20 free megabytes per day was supposed to be launched on April 13, our detailed review of April 11 can be read here. Unfortunately, the launch was postponed indefinitely and I had to write Update about this. Why they “slowed down” is a mystery, everything was already ready. And some inquisitive people even managed to connect this option to themselves through a mobile application.

After 10 days, the option was still launched, you can read the news of April 23 here, a detailed description on the operator's website here. As correctly pointed out in the comments, the cost of connection and the size / price of additional packages vary widely depending on the region.

In the descriptions that appeared, the assumption about per-kilobyte rounding of traffic with the option enabled was confirmed. Also, there was a practical experience of completely using up an additional package, in this case another one of the same is automatically connected. Of course, if there is a sufficient amount on the balance sheet.

It would seem that a happy ending has come and you can remove the warning Update from the overview header? Just like my gut felt, I decided to wait and see how it works. The option was connected on the first attempt and from April 23 to April 26 it functioned flawlessly. Including with the correct session rounding (1 KB). On the first day, the device started some kind of initiative and quickly sucked up 18+ MB of traffic on the counter, but the additional package did not turn on. When rounding 100 KB and more, 20 MB would be used up with real 16-17 MB.

April 27, the option suddenly "broke", and traffic began to be charged at retail, and at strange rates. Perhaps the rates correspond to the description, and the rounding of 250 KB on MegaFon Online is to blame. By the way, doing such rounding on the Data-tariff is in itself a fair amount of disgusting and “arm-twisting”. Any attempt by the device to go online removes 0.46 rubles. from the balance, and any sensor-trackers can have hundreds of such tiny sessions a day. With a typical m2m session of 7-12 KB, the average price of a megabyte of traffic will be more than 50 rubles, such a “favorable” tariff for data transfer.

Beeline, new "ALL"

Our review of the new "ALL" Beeline line in the Moscow region provoked a vigorous discussion thread and, apparently, a fair amount of calls to the contact center from other regions.

The situation is clear, it's unpleasant to feel left out. At the request of Beeline, Update was published. Judging by the correspondence, they were not going to offend anyone, a slight difference (several days) in terms. For example, in St. Petersburg, the line update is scheduled for May 8.

It seems that everything is good and blissful, but there is a small "but". In Moscow, Vse tariffs will be upgraded automatically for all current users. This is not only pleasant, but also a kind of insurance against non-obvious deterioration of parameters: if there is nothing suspicious in the news description, then there is no need to proofread the fine print. As far as I understand, in many regions they introduce new “ALL” with sending the old ones to the archive. The procedure is standard, but it also requires standard actions from the user:

  • Carefully study the description of the new version of the tariff on the site (it is better to read the pdf file). Along with improvements, things can get worse. If everything suits you - OK, if not - you are not driven from the archived version.
  • After making sure that everything is fine for you in the new version, you can proceed. Fortunately, the change of the tariff now, according to the law, once a month is free. But it’s better not to switch “immediately by running”, but better after exhausting the already paid package of minutes. A new, larger package of Internet and minutes will be given to you immediately upon transition, but everything previously paid and unused will “burn out”, keep in mind.

MegaFon and MTS Service

You can read our review of a relatively fresh (released in November last year), but already "mature" application "Personal Account" for MegaFon subscribers here, a review of the just released analogue of "MTS Service" - here.

In MegaFon, their mobile "Personal Account" continues to be edited and cleaned, the process is permanent. The conditions of tariffs and options are changing, all this must be carefully monitored and taken into account in new versions. It turns out that the application does not work in all regions / branches yet. But the number of "supported" regions clearly exceeded the number of "unsupported", and now the annotations list those regions where the application does NOT work, before it was the other way around.

An updated version of "MTS Service", now with support for the latest versions of Android. The application pleased with the description of innovations. It would be tempting to write “our review was read and finalized,” but these are clearly parallel processes. It's still nice that in the review I identified exactly those key flaws that are now fixed or planned to be fixed in the next version. We'll see. As I have repeatedly written, the mobile "Personal Account" is a very time-consuming project, this is not just another shooter with monetization templates to roll out in a week of freelancing.

MTS, Fixikfon

". and who are the Fixies, a big, big secret! I don’t watch TV, but a cartoon song came out of my subconscious. Good option name for those who understand. You can read the news here, a multi-page description (a lot of letters!) - here.

Personally, I don't consider myself a fan of the Fixies, it's a matter of taste and age. But the idea is interesting, and, in my opinion, Fixikfon has prospects. For 150 rubles. per month you get entertainment for the child, monitoring the location of the child, banning calls to short content numbers and much more. 150 rub. - who knows how much money for a complete package of solutions for a baby phone.

It is clear that our favorite operators first impose on us a bunch of paid services, clog the address book of the SIM card with phones of useless "reference" services with calls for 70 rubles. per minute, "Beeps", all kinds of content-provider garbage, etc. And then, for some money, they offer us to get rid of the "services" imposed by them. Not a bad business model, the gopniks practiced in the “man, buy a brick!” option. But in Fixiphone, not only getting rid of content and calls to short numbers, it is a whole complex in which they tried to put together everything that could be useful for “servicing” a child’s smartphone or tablet.

Short list of features:

  • Application "Fixicphone" with fixies, animated fixies, themes, ringtones, etc. Based on the release date (April 27), it looks like we are talking about this application.
  • The "Fixiephone" option with Internet filters (the "black list" principle), the prohibition of calls to short numbers, the prohibition of sending and receiving paid SMS, the prohibition of receiving SMS advertising, the ability to manage calls and SMS according to the "black list" principle.
  • The ability to request a child's phone balance via SMS, receive warning SMS about approaching balance to zero.
  • Determining the location of the child with the ability to view the coordinates on the map.
  • Service "Mom, I'm here!": with a short USSD command, the child initiates the sending of an SMS with his coordinates to the phones of his parents.

This is only the most basic in general terms, see the description for more details. I must say that most of the features have long been implemented as separate services, but here everything is brought together in a single package with a subscription fee of 150 rubles per month "for everything about everything." Will the service become popular and in demand? As for the special popularity, I doubt it, but the idea is curious, and some parents should like this option “in one bottle”. Moreover, many parents already use separate services. The kids are also not for nothing, they will receive their fixes in the application.

Detailing didn't clarify much. On the contrary, it raised additional questions. When the option was working, the traffic was called “Premium GPRS 661”, when it stopped working, it was not marked in any way in 2G / 3G networks and was marked “Premium GPRS 23” in the 4G network. It doesn't matter, the option is obviously "broken". And this is not a personal glitch, a colleague has exactly the same situation, and also since April 27. We will consider it an “open letter” with a request to repair or officially close the option with a refund of 100 rubles. for connecting this Data-happiness with a rounding of 250 KB each session.

UPDATE

At the beginning of May, the option was fixed, now everything is working fine and money is not withdrawn for the first 20 megabytes. In MegaFon, the failure was confirmed and the erroneously withdrawn money was returned (see below)

And on the seventh of May they returned again, now the amount to the nearest penny. It must be assumed that the second return has already been processed by the system in automatic mode for all users of the option. Let's hope that this adventure with the "Internet tablet" is over and the option will work fine.

". and who are the Fixies, a big, big secret!

  • This is only the most basic in general terms, see the description for more details.
