Huawei P20 Pro experience

In 2018, there was a breakdown in the consciousness of consumers, they began to perceive Huawei as an A-brand and buy models costing from 50 thousand rubles. The first such device was P20 Pro, it went on sale in April for 55 thousand rubles. Today the device costs 39,990 rubles, and in MTS you can additionally get a cashback of 5,000 rubles, which makes it one of the most affordable flagships on the market. Such a sharp price reduction is due to Huawei's policy, and not to any characteristics of the model or failures in sales, the device took a significant share in its segment and pulled off the demand for itself. For many, it was the P20 Pro that became the first smartphone from Huawei, and given the current cost, this device continues to be of interest. In the company's online store, this model is so often taken apart that it is periodically unavailable. The reason is that this store offers different gifts with smartphones.

Huawei has the current flagship Huawei Mate 20 Pro in its lineup, but its price is almost twice as high, which may stop many from buying. For most people, the technology available in the Mate 20 Pro is not so important, and in many aspects the P20 Pro is able to compete with the company's latest flagship.

We had several materials, including a review dedicated to the P20 Pro, I will not repeat myself and will only tell you about my impressions, so here are the links to these articles:

Design, appearance and lack of a 3.5 mm jack

I am calm about glass in the design of smartphones, I don’t consider this material to be something bad, the devices do not slip in my hands, but the glass is usually easily soiled, and you have to wipe it when there are a lot of handprints. Huawei has glass with a gradient fill, in the light the cases play, shimmer and give different shades, in the P20 Pro this can be seen in all its glory. In September, new color schemes appeared, pay attention to them.

There are even devices with a leather back, but they are much more expensive, so consider them as exotic.

In reviews, we often deal with new phones, they have not gone through fire and water, they have not yet been dropped, scratched, or carried in a pocket with keys. And what seems like a great solution can fade over time. There is no such problem with the P20 Pro, a couple of months in my hands usually reveal all possible shortcomings. I wore the P20 Pro without a case, with other phones, change and keys in my jacket pocket, and nothing critical. The edges on the glass are rubbed, it can be seen if you take the phone and look at it close up in the light.

Huawei P20 Pro experience

But due to overflows, everything looks completely different in life, remove the phone from a distance of 15 centimeters from the face, and it plays with all the colors, as usual.

Huawei P20 Pro experience

What can I say? It is possible that you will be annoyed by the fact that there are scratches in principle, it's like with scratches on the bumper of a car, which many car owners do not let go, they make you constantly think about yourself. But trust me, the look of the P20 Pro doesn't suffer.

Those who wish can hide the device in a case, I advise silicone, you can with a picture. I have a designer case, it is thin and pleasant, does not increase the size of the phone. For me, this parameter is important, since there are several devices in my pocket, and thick cases are not my choice. The disadvantage of the cover is that you do not see how the case plays in the light, and even in transparent silicone, the shine of the overflows fades. Therefore, after about a week, he sighed and took off the cover.

Huawei P20 Pro experience

Smearing of the case is undeniable, but it is also visible only in bright light, when the phone is on the table, it shimmers, and an optical illusion is created that the case is clean as a tear. And that's good.

A couple of times I dropped the device (without a case) on an oak parquet, on the ground, and each time my heart sank. But the P20 Pro did not receive any damage, there is a small wrinkle on the metal frame of less than a millimeter, and that's it.

Huawei P20 Pro experience

From the point of view of the build quality of the device, I have no complaints about its appearance, this is a flagship without any discounts. Sufficiently reliable and comfortable in terms of ergonomics. The only downside for me is that there is no 3.5 mm jack, so you need to wear an adapter if you want to listen to music using wired headphones. This can be interesting on an airplane if you have been banned from using your wireless earbuds, or if your wireless headphones have run out of power. Rare situations, but I would still like to have this connector. For many, this will be completely uncritical.

Face unlock, front fingerprint sensor

The market for flagship smartphones has become a technology competition where the same feature is described and implemented in different ways. For example, face recognition on the P20 Pro is fast and very fast after a few software updates. And this is a big plus, as it gives the convenience of working with the device. If you do not like this technology, you can use the familiar fingerprint sensor, it is located on the front panel, made in the form of a button. Oddly enough, for many people this is a virtue - here you can praise this arrangement of the button, even if it is placed at the bottom, but it’s more convenient for me than if the button is on the back panel. This is about as convenient as the fingerprint sensor built into the screen, while the key is more reliable. Physically, this is just a contact pad, it will not work to press in the full sense of the word, although there is an imitation of pressing, a vibration response.

Huawei P20 Pro experience

Using time, no wireless charging

The presence of an OLED screen is a big plus, since the 4000 mAh battery can squeeze the maximum out of it, namely the device is able to work during the day with the screen running up to 4-5 hours. Here everything is different for everyone, and we must remember that Huawei has a very aggressive power saving mode, many applications close in the background and do not transfer data. But over time, the device begins to “understand” what you are using, and does not kill background processes for these applications. Therefore, initially you get up to two days of work with the same screen time, then this time decreases, it comes out to about 1-1.5 days. As for me, this is very good, the device looks nice in this aspect.

The lack of wireless charging doesn't feel like the end of the world to me, it's good that fast charging is supported. This is a state of the art device in terms of how quickly it can be charged, and this makes me happy.

Image quality, cameras in P20 Pro

In the P20 Pro, the main camera consists of three modules, this is the first device of its kind to hit the market. A lot has been written about the camera, and even about the phone, dozens of reviews tell you what the advantage of the camera is, why it is so good. We had a comparison of different Huawei models, which I advise you to look at to understand how the cameras differ on different models of the company.

On my own behalf, I note that this is a flagship without any discounts in terms of the camera, the device shoots very well. You need to adapt to it in terms of AI modes, but it is better to turn them off, since it is not always possible to predict the final result. Night shooting is the strong point of this model. Given the current cost of the device, I can advise it to anyone who wants a good camera and does not want to overpay for it. Just look at my photos taken on different trips, you will understand what is the strength of this smartphone.

Display, performance and other little things

I did not say anything about the stuffing of the device, since I have nothing to tell here. The amount of RAM is 6 GB, and it will be enough for most buyers for the eyes. The smartphone has no performance issues. Built-in memory - 128 GB, which is also optimal for most people. And these opportunities will last for a year or two, there is nothing to regret. Therefore, you can safely buy this device not only now, but also in 2019, it has a long life cycle.

The presence of a “bang” on the screen is a minus for me, but you can remove it in the software, so this is a plus. The quality of the stereo speakers is good, they are loud, watching video on the screen is a pleasure. Music playback is also no problem, but since I listened on wireless headphones, I’ll keep silent about the quality, it’s the same as everywhere else, there are no pluses or minuses, a typical level.

The EMUI shell has some advantages, but it is very different from regular Android, there are also some illogical points. It’s a matter of taste, I don’t like it more than I like it, but in work it doesn’t cause any trouble, it’s quite possible to live with it.

Conclusions - in the bottom line

The P20 Pro model has been actively sold for more than six months, this flagship from Huawei has become one of the key ones for the company, as it is guaranteed to be in high demand. The price reduction only boosted its sales as the price/quality ratio improved. The cameras of this device distinguish it in its class and make high-quality photography even more affordable.

At the celebration of the birthday of my child, the mother of one of the invited girls showed her new thing - P20 Pro. She did not ask me for advice before buying, she chose on her own and was looking for value for money plus a good camera. The device turned out to be extremely successful for her, moreover, it was the first Huawei. I will quote what she said: “With today's cost and the fact that everyone praises how he photographs, I decided to take it. I looked at the new flagship, but there are a lot of things that I don’t need, and the cameras are comparable. I do not regret that I chose this way, as long as the phone pleases. On my own behalf, I’ll add that this is a flagship and with any transition from models of the budget or middle segment you will get a lot of positive emotions, this always happens when moving from one product class to another. In 2018, the P20 Pro turned out to be one of the key smartphones on the market, it had a huge impact on it, and sales only confirm this. The model remains relevant, so with a budget of about 40 thousand rubles, I advise you to take a closer look at this smartphone.

But due to overflows, everything looks completely different in life, remove the phone from a distance of 15 centimeters from the face, and it plays with all the colors, as usual.

Smearing of the case is undeniable, but it is also visible only in bright light, when the phone is on the table, it shimmers, and an optical illusion is created that the case is clean as a tear. And that's good.

A couple of times I dropped the device (without a case) on the oak parquet, on the ground, and each time my heart sank. But the P20 Pro did not receive any damage, there is a small wrinkle on the metal frame of less than a millimeter, and that's it.

The price drop only boosted its sales as the price/quality ratio improved.
